LASKER – Northeast Academy put two rushers over 100 yards while the defense pitched a second half shutout in a 34-20 win over Community Christian School here Friday night.

The Eagles fell behind early, but rallied thanks to a 208-yard performance from sophomore Marshall Medford and a 101-yard effort from senior Dawson Vann.

Community Christian took the opening kickoff and drove 56 yards on 10 plays to take the lead. Jack Beamon capped the drive with a 20-yard touchdown pass to Grant Barnes. The conversion run was stopped by Vann and his twin brother, Dalton as the Cyclones held a 6-0 lead.

Community Christian got a chance to add to that lead when they recovered an onside kick at the Northeast 45-yard line. They drove to the eight-yard line but a Dalton Vann tackle and a Camden White pass break-up ended the threat.

The Eagles then took over at their own three-yard line and drove 97 yards on 11 plays to surge ahead.

Dawson Vann had a 10-yard run on the drive, while Dalton Vann completed an important first down pass to Nathan Trevino and also had an 11-yard carry of his own.

Medford capped the drive when he scampered 46 yards to paydirt with 10:46 to play in the second quarter. Dawson Vann added the conversion and Northeast led 8-6.

The Eagles returned the onside kick favor and recovered their own when Trevino pounced on the ball at the Community 45-yard line.

Dalton Vann again had a key pass on the ensuing drive, connecting with Medford on a 14-yard gain. On the next play, Dawson Vann upped the score to 14-6 with a 16-yard run of his own. The conversion failed, but the Eagles were up 14-6 with 8:42 to play in the second.

On Community’s next drive, William Coggins forced a fumble that was recovered by Medford after the visitor had marched to the Northeast 10-yard line.

The Eagles put together their second drive of at least 90 yards, scoring nine plays later on a 10-yard run by Medford. The conversion again failed, but Northeast led 20-6 with 3:33 to play in the first half.

The Cyclones rallied, however, scoring two touchdowns in the final two minutes of the half. Beamon again connected on a touchdown pass, this one for 39 yards to Matthew Jackson. The conversion failed.

Community recovered the ensuing onside kick and went 48 yards in just four plays. The touchdown came when Bailey Bunn threw to Beamon, who completed the hook-and-ladder by tossing the ball to Stephen Edwards. Edwards completed the 33-yard score. Beamon then found Jackson on the two-point conversion and the score was knotted at 20-all at the intermission.

The Eagles set the tone for the second half of the opening drive as they went 70 yards on 12 plays and chewed up almost six minutes of game time.

Medford had a 15-yard run and Dalton Vann an 11-yard gainer for the big plays of the drive. Dawson Vann finished off the drive with a one-yard plunge with 6:17 to play in the third quarter, giving Northeast a 26-20 edge.

The Eagles’ defense stepped up on Community Christian’s first possession of the third quarter. Trevino had a pass break up and Dawson Vann added a tackle for loss as Community turned the ball over on downs at midfield on a four-and-out.

Northeast added a score on its next possession. Medford had a 45-yard run to cap the drive and Dalton Vann connected with Trevino on a two-point conversion to give the Eagles a 34-20 lead with 10:57 to play in the fourth quarter.

The next Cyclone drive ended when Dalton Vann had a fumble recovery inside the Eagles’ five-yard line.

Northeast took over and picked up three first downs to all but seal the win.

In addition to Medford and Dawson Vann, Dalton Vann had 15 carries for 78 yards and completed two passes for 22 yards.

Dalton Vann led the defense with nine tackles for the evening while Dawson Vann and Camden White had seven each. Payton Brinkley added four tackles for the Eagles.

Northeast, now 3-1 early in the season, will be at home again on Friday, Sept. 22 when they host Halifax Academy (3-0) for Homecoming. Kick off is set for 7 p.m.
