GATES – A single vehicle accident near here Monday afternoon claimed the life of a local man.
According to the North Carolina Highway Patrol, William A. Davis, 58, of Murfreesboro died at the scene of the accident in Gates County.
NCHP Trooper Z. Mize said that Davis was operating a vehicle (dump trailer) owned by Commercial Ready Mix and was westbound on Reynoldson Road approximately one mile from US 13 at the time of the mishap.
In his report, Trooper Mize noted that the vehicle ran off the right side of the road, causing the driver to overcorrect. That led to the vehicle crossing the centerline and traveling off the left side of the road. From there the vehicle impacted a ditch where it overturned.
Mize said the road was closed in both directions for approximately five hours due to the accident.
The accident resulted in the 13th fatality this year in the NCHP’s Troop A / District II area (Bertie, Gates, and Hertford counties). Three of those fatalities have occurred in Gates County.
