FEMA assistance numbers continue to rise in the aftermath of the string of deadly tornadoes that struck the eastern third of the state on April 16.

As of Tuesday (May 17), FEMA has received in excess of 8,200 requests for individual needs from citizens in 19 counties, including Bertie and Hertford. That has resulted in $5.41 million in aid ($3.91 million for housing and $1.5 million for other needs).

According to the numbers provided by FEMA, there have been 193 requests for individual aid in Bertie County, resulting in $582,778 worth of grants to meet the housing and other needs of residents affected by the tornadoes.

In Hertford County, 55 citizens have requested aid. To date, FEMA has extended grants totaling $69,746 to Hertford County residents.

Additionally, the Small Business Administration (SBA) has approved $4.25 million in low interest loans and grants to property owners in the 19 counties.

Combined, FEMA and the SBA have supplied $9.69 million in grants and loans to North Carolina citizens due to the April 16 storms.
