GARYSBURG – “When in doubt, work out.”

That phrase, and other similar ones, adorns the walls of Garysburg’s newly-opened Health and Wellness Center. They serve as encouragement to people who will soon be using the variety of exercise equipment available inside.

Town officials hosted a ribbon-cutting celebration for the facility on Tuesday, Nov. 14. It’s located in the smaller building on the back left side of the Garysburg Town Center (the former Garysburg Elementary School), near to the outdoor walking trail and playground.

“I couldn’t do this by myself,” he said, thanking the Town Board members and State House Representative Michael Wray for their unwavering support in the project.

The town received a $100,000 allocation from the state’s 2021-22 budget. Those grant funds were used to install a new HVAC system, renovate the inside, and purchase the assortment of exercise equipment – ranging from treadmills and bikes to weights and weightlifting gear.

“It’s an honor to serve the citizens of Northampton County,” said Wray. “This is going to be a big asset, from the youth to the senior citizens. It’s a good opportunity for the community.”

“This is a project that we thought about for a while,” explained Mayor Pro-Tem Lola Ausby. “We knew it would be good for the citizens, especially our seniors.”

She noted that it gives people an opportunity to have a place to exercise indoors when the weather isn’t good. And she added that people have already started to sign up for memberships.

The facility is free to use for Garysburg’s senior residents (age 65 and older) and for town employees. For all other residents of the town, the fee is $10 per month.

Non-resident senior citizens can also pay $10 per month, or sign up for 3-month ($25), 6-month ($50), or a yearly ($100) membership. Regular memberships are $15 per month, or 3-months ($40), 6-months ($50), or yearly ($160).

There is also an option to purchase a day pass for $5.

The facility will be open from 8-11 a.m. and from 4-7 p.m. Monday through Friday. Anyone interested in signing up for a membership can visit Garysburg Town Hall, located across the street, for more information.

As Tuesday’s celebration came to a close, there were already a few people trying out the new equipment, ready to get a head start on fitness.
