WOODLAND – Edna Joyner Burkett, a beloved wife, mother, and devoted Christian, passed away peacefully on November 28, 2023, at ECU Health Roanoke Chowan Hospital in Hertford County, North Carolina. She was born on November 16, 1935, a daughter of James Henry Joyner and Mary Rebecca Miles Joyner. Edna was blessed with a long and fulfilling life, reaching the age of 88 at the time of her passing.
Edna began her professional career as a bookkeeper in the automotive industry at Marsh Chevrolet which later became Charles H Jenkins. Her diligent work ethic and attention to detail were well known, earning her the respect and admiration of her colleagues. Beyond her professional endeavors, Edna found joy and solace in tending to her yard. She took great pride in maintaining its immaculate appearance and could often be seen working there at any given time. Alongside her gardening passion, Edna also had a talent for cooking. She was renowned for her delectable peanut butter cakes and unforgettable banana pudding, leaving a lasting impression on all who were fortunate enough to taste her creations. Edna’s faith played an integral role in her life, and she was an active member of Menola Baptist Church. Her unwavering devotion to Christianity shaped her character, making her a strong and compassionate woman.
Edna is survived by her beloved husband of 65 years, William Burkett; her daughter, Hope Burkett of Manteo; and her siblings: Shirley Joyner of Ahoskie, Brenda Joyner (Russell) White of Seaboard, Sidney Joyner of Woodland, and Moochie (Nancy) Joyner of Ahoskie; as well as her sisters-in-law: Debbie (Jerry) Coleson of Greenville, Betty Burkett of Lititz, PA, and Jeanette Burkett of Havelock. She also leaves behind numerous nieces, nephews, and cousins who will cherish her memory. Along with her parents, Edna is preceded in death by a sister, Frances Joyner Gunnells, and a brother, Donald Lee Joyner.
A visitation for Edna will be held on December 2, 2023, at 1 p.m. at Menola Baptist Church, followed by a celebration of life memorial service at 2 p.m. Reverend Willie McLawhorn will officiate the service. Inurnment will take place at Woodland Cemetery.
