WINTON – William Emmett Matthews, Sr. of Mt. Tabor Church Road, died suddenly from a massive heart attack on Monday, December 11, 2023 at the age of 63. Billy was born on April 9, 1960 to Ola Ray Rawls Matthews and the late Alfred Ray Matthews, Sr. of Aulander, NC.
Billy made roofing his career, beginning as a teenager. He took so much pride in his work and everything he did he wanted it done just right. His goal was always perfection. He was a good man with a heart as big as all outdoors. He would always go that extra mile to help anyone in need. Billy’s greatest love was his family and fishing, then came wrestling, and football. He was a true-blue die-hard Kansas City Chiefs Fan his entire life. Billy Matthews was a gentle soul and will be missed by all who knew and loved him.
Besides his daddy, Billy was preceded in death by his wife, Shirley; a sister, Julie Christal Matthews; and infant daughter, Jennifer Louise Matthews.
Left to cherish his loving memory is his mother, Ola Ray; his son, William Emmett Matthews, II of Aulander; two daughters, Kasey Dawn Matthews of Lenoir, NC, and Janeen Turner of Eure, NC; two brothers, Alfred Ray “Buck” Matthews Jr. (Rhonda) of Aulander, and Jeffrey Wayne Matthews of Edenton, NC; two sisters, Phyllis Matthews Coburn (Jeffrey Hunt) of Virginia Beach, VA, and Jamie Lynn Matthews Liverman (James) of Aulander; four grandchildren, William E. “Will” Matthews, III of Severn, NC, Mickaylee and Logan Turner of Eure, NC, and Harley Dawn Matthews of Lenoir, NC. Also surviving are many nieces, nephews, extended family and friends.
The family will receive friends on Thursday, December 14, 2023 from 6-8 p.m. at Garrett-Sykes Funeral Service, Ahoskie, NC
A celebration of life funeral service will be held on Friday, December 15, 2023 at 2 p.m. at Garrett-Sykes Funeral Service, Ahoskie, NC with Rev. Greg Hurdle officiating. Burial followed at Aulander Cemetery, Aulander, NC.
