ELIZABETH CITY – It’s no wonder that the fire alarm sounded here Saturday night at the RL Vaughan Center as the Hawks were “smoking hot.”
Chowan shot a sizzling 61.3 percent in the second half, turning a narrow 46-45 halftime lead into a 93-82 win over local rival Elizabeth City State University in non-conference men’s basketball action.
Despite the brief delay caused by the fire alarm, the Hawks went on to complete the season sweep of ECSU. Chowan defeated the Vikings, 86-78 in Murfreesboro on Nov. 30.
Preston Le Gassick led the Hawks with 24 points on 8-of-12 shooting to go with four rebounds, six assists, and three steals.
Daylan Askew and Skyler Davies chipped in with 18 points each. Askew added eight assists, while Davies was 7-of-8 from the floor and added seven rebounds.
RJ Wilson tallied 10 points and nine rebounds.
Chowan (7-5 overall) returns to the floor in the New Year on January 3 as the Hawks travel to Wilson to take on Barton in Conference Carolinas action. Tip-off is slated for 7 pm.
