RALEIGH – Rodney D. Pierce has declared his candidacy as a Democratic primary challenger for North Carolina’s House District 27, aiming to usher in a new era of Democratic representation in the district currently held by incumbent Representative Michael Wray.
“The time for change is now. This district, our home, deserves a representative who genuinely understands the needs and aspirations of our community, and I am ready to step up to the challenge,” said Pierce.
Pierce, who resides in Roanoke Rapids, is an award-winning educator, research historian, and dedicated public servant. As a current middle school teacher and community leader committed to progressive ideals, empowerment, and effective governance, Pierce aims to bring positive change to HD-27.
Pierce’s campaign is dedicated to revitalizing this rural and diverse district with an emphasis on authentic representation that resonates with its constituents. Prioritizing commonly shared values, community engagement, and pressing issues such as fortifying the public school system, Pierce brings a fresh perspective and unwavering dedication to the community.
Pierce said he will fight to fully fund public schools via the Leandro Plan, defend democracy by protecting the right to vote, support workers’ rights and a living wage for working people, and advocate for affordable healthcare, housing, and equitable economic development.
He currently serves on the Governor’s Teacher Advisory Committee, was previously the 2019 North Carolina Council for the Social Studies Teacher of the Year, and was an inaugural Teacher Fellow for the NC Equity Fellowship through the Center for Racial Equity in Education (CREED). He has worked as a consultant with the NC Department of Public Instruction, the NC Museum of History, and the NC African American Heritage Commission.
“As the Representative for House District 27, I will be the champion of public education, economic development and advancement that our neglected community deserves,” said Pierce.
