MLK tributes set Jan. 15 in R-C area

Local tributes to the late Civil Rights leader Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. are planned for Monday, Jan. 15.
In Ahoskie, a march is scheduled to begin at 10:30 a.m. at the Ahoskie Fire Department. From there, those participating will walk north on Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Drive, stopping at New Ahoskie Baptist Church for a program that will last until 12 noon.
As part of the Ahoskie event, winners wil be announced of a youth essay contest.
Also on Monday, Jan. 15, Mount Olive Missionary Baptist Church, located near Lewiston, will host a special event entitled “Let Us Rise to the Occasion on MLK, Jr. Day.” That event is scheduled to being at 10 a.m. and include the following:
Bertie High School and Hertford County High School students will present essays. The Essay Contest winners who placed 1st, 2nd and 3rd will receive monetary donations.
A movie will be shown of one of Dr. King’s speeches entitled: “What is Your Life’s Blueprint.”
Area youth Praise Dancers are scheduled to perform.
