ARLINGTON, VA – Anthony R. “Tony” Hale was promoted to the rank of Lieutenant General during a ceremony held Jan. 3 at the Pentagon, in Arlington, VA.

Lieutenant General Hale is a native of Aulander.

The ceremony was hosted by General Randy George, 41st Chief of Staff of the Army, and was attended by the Secretary of the Army, HON Christine E. Wormuth; the Undersecretary of the Army, HON Gabe Camarillo; the Deputy Undersecretary of the Army, HON Mario Diaz; and the Sergeant Major of the Army, Michael Weimer. General (Retired) George W. Casey, 36th Chief of Staff of the Army, provided remarks.

Following the ceremony, Hale became the US Army’s 48th Deputy Chief of Staff for Intelligence, G-2. He is the Senior advisor to the Secretary of the Army and Chief of Staff of the Army for all aspects of Intelligence, Counterintelligence and Security, and responsible for the training, equipping, policy and oversight of an Army Intelligence and Security Enterprise of more than 60,000 Soldiers and civilians.

Before this assignment, he was the Commanding General and Commandant of the United States Army Intelligence Center of Excellence and Fort Huachuca, Arizona.

During the ceremony, General George pointed out that while we commission 600 Military Intelligence Lieutenants per year, we appoint one Lieutenant General to be the Army Chief of Staff Army for Intelligence (G-2) every three years. Thus, a Lieutenant commissioned in any given year has a slim (.0005%) probability of becoming the Army G-2.

“That speaks to this accomplishment and to all that Tony has done and sacrificed over his career,” Casey stated.

Casey praised Hale, saying, “My successors saw in Tony, the same ability, intellect, and character that I saw, and they put him through a series of positions that would prepare him. I can’t imagine anyone more prepared than Tony to assume this position.”

Director of National Intelligence, Avril Haines, welcomed Hale’s appointment noting that Hale is “an extraordinary leader who has developed the Army intelligence enterprise and profession over a lifetime of service.”

A career intelligence officer, Lieutenant General Hale served in numerous command, staff, and operational assignments. His command assignments include Commander, 704th Military Intelligence Brigade, United States Army Intelligence and Security Command, Fort Meade, Maryland; and 519th Military Intelligence Battalion, 525th Battlefield Surveillance Brigade, XVIII Airborne Corps, Fort Liberty, North Carolina. He also served as the Director of Intelligence, J-2, of United States Special Operations Command; Deputy Chief of Staff, Intelligence, Resolute Support, United States Forces – Afghanistan; Director of Intelligence, J-2, of Joint Special Operations Command; and Aide-de-Camp to the 36th Chief of Staff of the Army. Hale has been serving as special assistant to the Director of the Army Staff since September 2023.

His operational deployments include Operation Joint Endeavor and Operation Joint Forge (Bosnia), Operation Joint Guardian (Kosovo), Operation Enduring Freedom (Afghanistan), Operation Freedom’s Sentinel (Afghanistan), and Operation Iraqi Freedom.

Lieutenant General Hale earned his commission in the Military Intelligence Corps through North Carolina State University in 1990, and holds a bachelor’s degree in political science. He also earned a master’s degree “with distinction” in national security and strategic studies from the United States Naval War College.

Lieutenant General Hale is the grandson of the late Thomas and Margaret Hale of Aulander and the late Robert and Geraldine Brantley of Center Grove. He is the son of Tommy and Liz Hale of Aulander.

Lieutenant General Hale is married to the former Stacey Renee Tayloe of Ahoskie. Mrs. Hale, a licensed clinical social worker, serves the Army as a DA Civilian with over 25 years of federal service. She is currently serving as the Director of Plans and Operations for the HQDA Army Sexual Harassment/Assault Response and Prevention (SHARP) Program.
