WINDSOR – The second conference game between Bertie High School and Gates County High School took place at the “Falcons Nest” on Friday, Feb. 2.
The first quarter started with the potential of this matchup being a fairly close game, but that quickly turned decidedly in the favor of Gates County who would collect a 54-30 win.
The Lady Falcons took an early 3-0 lead within two minutes of the first quarter. Gates County quickly answered with a “and one” completed series by London Barber, which knotted the score at 3-3.
The teams would lock-up the score one more time (5-5), but that would be the last tie of the game as the Lady Barons continued to build on their score, ending the first period ahead, 14-8.
The Falcons would not find the bottom of the net until a three-pointer by Zynaeja Leary with 2:15 left to play in the second period.
Meanwhile, the Lady Barons continued to rack up points and increased their lead.
Gates County also turned up the dial on the defensive end by denying Bertie access to the basket while forcing a plethora of turnovers which were converted to offensive baskets.
Gates defensive and offensive strategies carried them throughout the second half until the buzzer sounded ending the game.
The high scorers for Gates County were Zariah Rogers (15 points) and London Barber (13).
Bertie’s top scorers were Rakayah Peele (13 points) and Kydra Brown (7).
Gates County used the win to improve to 15-4 overall and 5-2 in the Four Rivers Conference, which is good for second place in the league behind Perquimans County.
Bertie (8-9; 3-4) is tied for third place with Washington County.
