WINDSOR – A local man is jailed here without bond after being charged for rape and two other crimes.
Bertie County Sheriff Tyrone Ruffin reports that 33-year-old Alqwan Akeem Hayes of Windsor is charged with three felonies: kidnapping, first degree forcible rape, and first degree force sex offense.
Hayes was arrested at his residence yesterday (Wednesday).
Ruffin said that shortly before midnight on Feb. 3, Bertie Sheriff’s deputies and Bertie EMS were dispatched to NC 42 in Colerain in reference to a sexual assault. He said the deputies spoke with the victim and witnesses at the scene prior to the victim being transported to ECU Health Roanoke-Chowan Hospital in Ahoskie.
The next day, BCSO Investigator B. Turner began his initial investigation into the incident. Over the next two weeks, Turner and Lt. K. Johnson were able to conduct several interviews and obtain evidence corroborating the victim and witness statements.
Yesterday, Ruffin said that Turner presented the evidence discovered through the course of his investigation to the on-duty Magistrate. That led to arrest warrants being obtained for Hayes. Later in the day, Turner, Sgt. D. Young, and Deputy B. Manning took Hayes into custody at his residence.
Sheriff Ruffin added that Turner interviewed Hayes prior to being processed and obtained a confession relating to the Feb. 3 incident.
Hayes was then taken before the on duty Magistrate where he received no bond, and was confined into the Bertie/Martin Regional Jail.
