With early voting wrapping up on March 2, the only other opportunity for people to cast their ballots in the upcoming primary will be on Election Day on Tuesday, March 5.

Polling places in each Roanoke-Chowan area county as well as statewide will be open from 6:30 a.m. to 7:30 p.m. on Election Day.

The purpose of a primary is to narrow down the candidates to one per party. The candidates who garner the most votes in the primary will appear on the ballot during the general election to be held later this year in November.

This year, voters will have to show a photo ID when they go to vote.

According to the State Board of Elections, most voters will simply show their driver’s license. But other photos IDs are accepted as well, including a state ID from the NCDMV (a “non-operator ID”), a US passport, an NC voter photo ID issued by a county board of elections, a college or university student ID approved by the State Board of Elections, a state or local government or charter school employee ID approved by the State Board of Elections, military or veterans ID card (with photo), and tribal enrollment card (with photo).

Voters who are 65 years or older may use an expired form of acceptable ID if the ID was unexpired on their 65th birthday.

A number of federal, state, and local races are on the ballot for this primary election.

Local races in Bertie, Hertford, and Northampton counties include seats on the Board of Commissioners as well as the Register of Deeds. Northampton and Gates counties will also include a nonpartisan race for seats on their Board of Education.

Voters will also cast their ballots for NC Senate and NC House of Representatives. All four counties are included in NC Senate District 1. For the NC House of Representatives, Bertie County is in District 23, Hertford and Gates are in District 5, and Northampton is in District 27.

The ballot will also include seats for District Court Judge. Bertie, Hertford, and Northampton counties are in District 7, and Gates County is in District 1.

State races will include Governor, Lt. Governor, Attorney General, State Auditor, Commissioner of Agriculture, Commissioner of Insurance, Commissioner of Labor, Secretary of State, Superintendent of Public Instruction, State Treasurer, NC Supreme Court Associate Justice (seat 6), and NC Court of Appeals Judges (seats 12, 14, 15).

Federal races will include Presidential preference and US House of Representatives (District 1).
