AHOSKIE – Ronnie David Smith, Sr. passed away on March 6, 2024 at his home. Born on August 24, 1941 to William Matthew Smith and Velma Williams Smith in Bertie County, N.C. He was preceded in death by his parents; first wife, Bonnie Harrington Smith; and brother, James Ralph Smith. He was a loving husband, father, and grandfather and will be missed by all that knew him.

Left to cherish his memory is his wife, Lois Swain Smith; his children, Michelle S. Jones (Frank), Carla Thrower, and Ronnie D. Smith, Jr. (Sarah); his grandchildren, Will Jones (Samantha), Matthew Jones, Kristen Sulinski (Jonathon), Trent Alexander (Ashley), Caroline Thrower, Ronnie D. Smith III; great grandchildren, Claire and Charlie Sulinski, and Ellis Alexander; step children, Kim Keel, Paula Hall (David), and Sammy Respass; step grandchildren, Michael (Emily), Thomas (Elizabeth), Kara Hall, Brayson and Eli Respass; step great grandchildren, Paxton and Matthew Hall.

Ronnie retired in August 2001 from NC DOT as District Engineer with 41 years of service. He started in the Construction Department and worked for 19 years. He transferred to the Maintenance Department in 1979 working in various positions ending at District Engineer of Division One District Two upon his retirement.

After retiring Ronnie discovered the joy of reading. His favorite authors were Lee Childs, David Baldacci, James Patterson, Stuart Woods, John Grisham, and Greg Iles, just to name a few.

Ronnie was a lifelong member of Powellsville Baptist Church and served as a Sunday school teacher, Deacon, Trustee and numerous other positions in the church. His memory will forever live in the hearts of his loved ones. May he rest in eternal peace.

The family wishes to thank Ann Marie and the Orange Team at ECU Health Hospice for their care during his time of transition.

The family will receive friends on Sunday, March 10, 2024 from 6-7:30 p.m. at Garrett-Sykes Funeral Service, Ahoskie, N.C. and other times at the home.

A celebration of life service will be held on Monday, March 11, 2024 at 11 a.m. at Powellsville Baptist Church, Powellsville, N.C. with Rev. Matt Miles officiating. Burial will follow at Highland Memorial Gardens, Ahoskie, N.C.
