AHOSKIE – Jeanette Faye Mathias, 71, of 442 US Highway 158 West, died Wednesday, March 27, 2024, in ECU Health Medical Center in Greenville.

Ms. Mathias was born in Hertford County on September 24, 1952, and was the daughter of the late Thomas Paul and Annie Evelyn Piland Mathias. She had worked as a substitute teacher at Ridgecroft School, as a dispatcher and deputy with the Hertford County Sheriff’s Department, and as a Lieutenant with the Ahoskie Police Department. Other areas of service included her many hours of work with the Capital Campaign at Ridgecroft that funded the building of the library and administration building, her serving as the school’s PTO President, and her membership in the original Winton Volunteer Rescue Squad and Winton Baptist Church.

Surviving are her children, Laura Jeanette Batts (husband, Mitch) and Kevin Thomas Mathias (wife, Holly); and two sisters, Marie Benthall and Betty Mathias, all of Ahoskie. Also surviving are her four grandchildren, Shelton Mitchell Batts II (wife, Sidney), Annie Laura Batts, Annabell Faith Mathias, and Mason Thomas Mathias.

A memorial service will be held Saturday, April 6th, at 2 p.m. in Winton Baptist Church and will be conducted by her pastor, The Rev. Derik Davis. Friends may visit with the family in the fellowship hall immediately following the service. A private burial will be held on the family farm, a place she lovingly referred to as “the ranch”.
