AHOSKIE – Shomya Futrell, a student at Roanoke-Chowan Community College, is immersing herself in the fascinating world of mechatronics….a multidisciplinary field that incorporates aspects of mechanical engineering and electronics to cultivate ingenuity.
Futrell is charting her course towards a promising future as a Robotics Engineer, armed with a certification in HVAC and Electrical Systems. She will spend the summer at Nucor, a steel production company based in North Carolina, as a 2024 Electrical Maintenance intern.
When asked about her aspirations for the Nucor internship, Futrell stated, “I’m hoping to improve my communication skills. I also hope to learn more about the craft I’ve chosen and ways to enhance my technical skills.”
“We take immense pride in Shomya’s academic achievements and personal growth, both within and beyond the classroom,” stated Dr. Tanya Oliver, VP of Instruction and Student Services at R-CCC. “Our mission is to provide students with a solid academic foundation, which they can then enhance through real-world experiences such as internships and paraprofessional employment. Shomya’s internship at Nucor is a testament to her dedication, and we are confident it will further boost her self-assurance as a student.”
From an early age, Futrell’s drive to pursue education and eventually build a career in mechatronics became evident.
“I’ve always been fascinated by how things work, and I love tinkering with machines,” stated Futrell. “Mr. William Nelson, Industrial Systems & Mechatronics Program Coordinator at R-CCC, helped me bring the idea to life. Mechatronics combines my interests in mechanics, electronics, and programming. It’s the perfect blend for me.”
The ‘perfect blend’ became a compelling force behind Futrell’s choice to further her education at R-CCC. By attending R-CCC, she has embraced the chance to pursue her desired field of study while remaining close to home. “To me, pursuing a career that I enjoy while being close to home means having the best of both worlds,” Futrell affirmed. “It allows me to do what I love, while also being able to spend time with my loved ones and be a part of my community. It brings a sense of fulfillment and balance to my life.”
Futrell’s commitment to her academic pursuits has garnered recognition. As an “A” student, she was recently honored with the Mechatronics Technology: Dedicated Performance Leader award by R-CCC’s Industrial Systems and Mechatronics Program.
Nelson praised Shomya’s academic achievements as he stated, “From the very first day Shomya stepped into my classroom, her genuine passion for Mechatronics was distinctive. She consistently engages in thought-provoking discussions during lectures and eagerly seeks guidance from her instructors. I take pride in her progress so far, and I’m excited to witness her continued growth.”
Futrell hopes to inspire others on their own journeys toward fulfilling their dreams. She offers the following advice to those considering post-secondary education, particularly at a community college: “Pursuing a secondary education at a community college can be a great choice. My advice would be to make the most of your time there. Take advantage of the resources available, like tutoring or career services. Remember, it’s a steppingstone towards your goals, so make the most of it.”
Dr. Murray Williams, President of Roanoke-Chowan Community College, conveyed her immense pride in Futrell’s journey.
“Shomya’s achievements as a student serve as a powerful testament to the transformative impact of education,” stated Dr. Williams. “By unlocking educational opportunities, we empower individuals and promote upward mobility within our community. Roanoke-Chowan Community College stands as the bridge between community and careers, and Shomya’s internship at Nucor brilliantly exemplifies our mission.”
Roanoke-Chowan Community College was founded in 1967 and is a public, two-year institution of higher education offering associate degrees, diplomas, certificates, college and career readiness, and customized business and industry training in a variety of delivery modes promoting public service, transfer, and workforce development.
