WINDSOR – Members of the Ahoskie Alumnae Chapter of Delta Sigma Theta Sorority, Inc. recently presented Jabberwock 2024 at the Bertie High School Auditorium in Windsor.

This year’s theme was “An Exhibition of Pearls: Empowered for the Purpose of Inspiring and Fostering Change”.

Jakhoury Leary provided music for the evening. Ellis’ Angels were the Opening Act for the program.

Valarie Patrick welcomed attendees and Jean M. Cherry presented the occasion for Jabberwock 2024.

Mistress of Ceremonies, Beshyla Smith, and Norman Cherry, Jr., Master of Ceremonies, were introduced by Janine Moore.

Mr. Jabberwock 2020 Aren Kimbrough Buffaloe was presented to the audience and presented his farewell message.

Assata Kimbrough Buffaloe introduced members of the Ahoskie Alumnae Chapter and recognized visiting Deltas. Hope Eley recognized special guests in attendance.

Jabberwock contestants for 2024 were Mr. Travante Askew, Miss Samayah Bellamy, Miss Aiyanna Grace Hutchinson, Miss Teairra Marie Moore, Miss Keviona Taylor, and Miss Alexis Vann.

Travante Askew was sponsored by Marlina Perry, Genia Canada, Jean Canada, LaQuanda Leary, Ebony Rankins, Josie Taylor, and Kim White. Travante is the son of the late Travis Askew and the stepson of Toni Sierra Askew. Travante will be a senior at Bertie Early College High School next school term. He plans to attend Fayetteville State University to major in Computer Science that will prepare him for a career specifically in Cyber Science Security.

Samayah Bellamy was sponsored by Janine Moore, Tondra Ballance, Danielle Briscoe, Reba Carlton, Threann Herbert, Bobbi Holley, Greta A. Lassiter, Patricia Myrick, Janice Ricks, and Shelia Simpson. She is the daughter of Quincy Bellamy and Toni Sierra Askew and the stepdaughter of the late Travis Askew. Samayah will be a senior at Bertie Early College High School this fall. Samayah is very spiritually oriented and is proud to have a close relationship with God. Her goal is to present herself in a graceful and pleasing manner. Samayah would like to become a pediatric nurse and be a blessing to the children who need her services.

Aiyanna Grace Hutchinson was sponsored by Cheryl Gatling-Tyler, Pam Hall, Helen Lassiter, Loretta Lassiter, Sandra Lassiter, Loretta McCullough, and Rhonda Taylor. Aiyanna is the daughter of Latonia Simmons. She will be a senior at Hertford County High School in the fall. After graduation, Aiyanna has aspirations of attending Winston Salem State University or East Carolina University to pursue a degree in nursing. She is known for being a dedicated and exceptional student.

Teairra Marie Moore was sponsored by Jaime Heckstall, Linda Peele, Ava Boone, April Eason, Whitney Hall, Amaya Heckstall, Thomasha Harrell, JacQuesha Harrison, Camille Rascoe, Janice Sharpe, Martha Thompson, Kenyatta Ward, and Kristen Watford. Teairra is the daughter of Barry and Debra Moore. She is a 2024 graduate of Bertie Early College High School where she was also enrolled in the Martin Community College Associate Degree Program. Teairra plans to attend Winston Salem State University this fall to major in Psychology. She stated that participating in the Jabberwock Pageant has been an invaluable experience that allowed her to acquire essential skills that will support her academic and professional growth.

Keviona Taylor was sponsored by Floria Smith, Terrell Deloatch, Mary Ruffin-Harrell, Jasmine Ryan, Danielle Poyer-Ruffin, Sha-Tesia Sharpe, Beshelya Smith, and Tiffany Walton. Keviona is the daughter of Randall Jr. and Takeyla Hall Taylor. Keviona is a graduate of C. S. Brown High School STEM, Baccalaureate Program. She plans to attend Fayetteville State University this fall to major in Nursing. Keviona was a Top Ten Honors student. Her favorite scripture is Jeremiah 29:11 NIV: “For I know the plans I have for you,” declares The Lord, “plans to prosper you and not to harm you, plans to give you hope and a future.”

Alexis “Lisa” Vann was sponsored by Wendy Vann, Frances Bazemore, Stephanie Cherry, Sherry Davis-Ransome, Hope Eley, Rosalind Grant, Vernetta Henderson, Annie Mobley, Deborah Morrison, Deboria Outlaw, Constance Richardson, Jamila K. Riddick, Austin Vaughan, Gail Vaughan, Viola Vaughan-Holland, Jackie White-Porter, and Felicia Mosley Williams. Lisa is the daughter of Elrod and Wendy Vann. Lisa will be a senior at Hertford County Early College High School in the fall. She is dually enrolled in pursuit of an Associate in Science Degree at Roanoke Chowan Community College. Lisa is currently exploring healthcare careers with an interest in anesthesiology. She is a Girl Scout Ambassador in Troop 628 of the Girl Scouts of the Colonial Coast. Lisa walks by the scripture Philippians 4:13 “I can do all things through Christ who strengthens me”.

The Jabberwock contestants provided entertainment during the program and their parents were introduced to the audience. The contestants were presented with gifts and awards for their participation.

Greta Lassiter presented Scrapbook awards and Jaime Heckstall recognized academic awards.

The highlight of the evening was the presentation of the Jabberwock Court by Terrell Deloatch.

Alexis “Lisa” Vann was crowned Miss Jabberwock 2024. First Runner-Up was Teairra Marie Moore.

Jakhoury Leary presented a musical salute to Miss Jabberwock 2024 and her court.

The program ended with Mrs. Linda S. Peele, President of the Ahoskie Alumnae Chapter, giving closing remarks and thanks.
