MURFREESBORO – Charles Lee Johnson, born on January 23, 1947, in Windsor, Bertie County, North Carolina, departed this life peacefully at the age of 77 on July 24, 2024, at his home in Murfreesboro, Hertford County, North Carolina.

Charles proudly served his country in the United States Army. After his service, he pursued a fulfilling career as a Farm Equipment Mechanic. Known for being a jack of all trades, Charles was always a hard worker who put dedication into everything he did. Outside of his professional life, Charles had a zest for living and enjoyed various activities. He loved karaoke, gardening, and dancing, passions that brought joy to him and those around him. Charles found solace in traveling with his loving wife, creating countless cherished memories. Charles will forever be remembered for his industrious spirit, love for his family, and the joy he brought into the lives of many.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Dessie Mizelle Johnson and Clarence Johnson; and his siblings, Mickey, Vivian, Annie Mae, and Ivory.

Left to treasure his memory are his beloved wife, Norma of the home; daughter, Marie Garris (Bubba) of Kelford; two sons, Charles Lee “Chuck” Johnson of Columbia, SC, and Tommy Ray Johnson (Heather) of Murfreesboro; stepson, Kevin Outland (Kathy) of Hexlena; and stepdaughter, Sherry Outland of Beaufort. He also leaves behind thirteen grandchildren, Tina Chavis (Brandon) of Aulander, Ivey Lassiter (Nicholas Welton) of Roxobel, Michelle Johnson of Roanoke Rapids, Kaitlin Outland of Hexlena, Kristin Outland of Hexlena, Kelly Springle of Beaufort, Bonnie Johnson of Murfreesboro, and Allison Johnson of Murfreesboro, Nathan Garris (Hannah) of Murfreesboro, Timmy Johnson of Minnesota, Justin Johnson of Ahoskie, Billy Lewter (Emily) of Florida, and Michael Thagard of Beaufort; and thirteen great-grandchildren, Ryder, Waylon, Brandon Jr., Noven, Hunter, Everly, Sadie, Alissa, Joseph, Wyatt, Autumn, Haven, and Zack. Charles is also survived by his sisters, Carolyn and Ruth Ann, along with numerous nieces, nephews, extended family members, and friends.

The family will receive friends on Monday, July 29, 2024, from 1-2 p.m. at Garrett-Sykes Funeral Service, Ahoskie, NC. A celebration of life funeral service will follow at 2 p.m. at the same location, with Rev. Rick Lowery officiating. There will be a private burial at Albert G. Horton National Cemetery in Suffolk, VA.
