WINDSOR – Two people have been arrested on unrelated charges over the past week.

A Battleboro woman is in the Bertie-Martin Regional Jail under identity theft charges while a Windsor man is facing robbery and drug charges.

According to Bertie County Sheriff John Holley, his office received a call earlier this month from a woman in Mission, Texas. The caller said a safe containing personal information had been stolen from her home in Texas in 2005.

“She informed the officer that the subject may be using her identity and working at Perdue in Lewiston,” Sheriff Holley said.

An investigation into the complaint revealed that a woman using the caller’s name was working at Perdue and officers went to the plant and arrested the woman on May 12.

Maria Vazques, 40, was charged with felony identity theft at the time of the incident. She was placed in the Bertie-Martin Regional Jail under a $25,000 cash bond and a provision to provide photo identification for release.

“I’m glad we were able to assist someone in getting their identity restored,” Sheriff Holley said. “Identity theft is a problem and helping put the culprit behind bars to give the victim some relief is a good thing.”

In a separate incident, Bertie County Sheriff’s Detective Harris Williams arrested a subject and charged him with robbery with a dangerous weapon and possession with intent to sell and deliver cocaine.

Det. Williams had warrants for the arrest of Tracy Spivey, 36, of Grabtown Road in Windsor and went to serve those warrants. Upon arresting Spivey, Det. Williams and officers from the Windsor Police Department found crack cocaine in his possession, leading to the drug charge.

Sheriff Holley said Spivey is also facing charges of common law robbery in Washington County. He is currently in the Washington County Detention Center under a $30,000 secured bond.

“I appreciate the cooperation of the Windsor Police Department,” Sheriff Holley said. “We continue to work together to help the citizens and that is always a positive.”
