WINTON – Janice Marie Nichols Parker, born on January 29, 1944, in Hertford County, North Carolina, passed away peacefully on Tuesday, July 30, 2024, in Franklin, Virginia at the age of 80.

Janice was a beloved mother, grandmother, sister, and friend who touched many lives with her kindness and warmth. She worked for USDA Rural Development for twelve years. She was renowned in her community for making the best sweet pickles and was deeply passionate about her family, especially her grandchildren, whom she adored. Gardening was one of Janice’s greatest joys, tending lovingly to her favorite zinnias and daffodils, while also taking pleasure in watching bluebirds in her yard. She had a special fondness for her dogs, Susie and June Bug, who brought her immense happiness. Janice Marie Nichols Parker will be remembered for her quiet strength, loving spirit, and the simple yet profound ways she enriched the lives of those around her. She will be dearly missed by all who knew her.

Janice was a member of Winton Baptist Church. Throughout her life, she exemplified faith, love, and commitment, sustaining her through both joyful and challenging times.

She was predeceased by her father, Paul Sherwood Nichols; mother, Bernice Lassiter Nichols; husband, John Mills Parker; brothers, Dennis Joel Nichols, and W. Randolph Nichols; sisters, Sandra Nichols Byrum, and Alice Faye Cale; and daughter-in-law, Susan Futrell Parker.

Janice’s legacy lives on through her surviving family: her daughter, Dr. Julie Starr Parker; her son, John Carlton Parker and wife Ruthcil; two grandsons, Jarryd Seth Parker, and Jacob Carlton Parker; two step grandchildren; Ashley and Zander; her brother, Gene S. Nichols and wife Eda of Peabody, Massachusetts; and brother-in-law, Johnny Byrum of Colerain; along with numerous nieces, nephews, and friends who will cherish her memory.

A graveside funeral service will be held on Thursday, August 1, 2024, at 2 p.m. at the Winton Baptist Church Cemetery, with Rev. Derik Davis officiating.
