Ahoskie shooter arrested

AHOSKIE – The suspect in a shooting and assault case here Aug. 28 has been arrested.
Maurice Baum Jr., age 20 of Elizabeth City, was taken into custody on Saturday (Sept. 7) in Chesapeake, VA, according to Ahoskie Police Chief Michele Garrett.
Garrett added that Chesapeake Police officers were in a chase with Baum and he was apprehended.
Baum was booked in Chesapeake Correctional Center and remains confined there at this time. He had several warrants served on him, including those from Aug. 28 crime where the Ahoskie Police charged him with felony breaking and entering with intent to terrorize, and two counts of attempted first degree murder.
Baum is suspected of breaking into a home on West Church Street in Ahoskie at around 6:30 p.m. on Aug. 28. Upon the arrival of the Ahoskie Police, they found two victims, a male who had been shot and a female that had been assaulted.
The male was airlifted to Sentara Norfolk General Hospital. The female was taken to ECU Health Roanoke-Chowan Hospital where Garrett said she was treated and released.
Neither of the victims was identified by name.
The motive for the shooting and assault remains under investigation.
