MURFREESBORO – The Chowan men’s soccer team used a strong second half to secure a 4-1 non-conference win over Virginia State University on Tuesday afternoon.

The win moves the Hawks to 1-0-1 on the season and drops the Trojans to 0-2-0.

It also allowed Chris Whalley to notch his 100th career win as the Chowan head coach. His overall coaching record over 11 seasons improved to 100-51-28. Whalley has two Conference Carolinas championships under his belt and a regular season Conference Carolinas title (2019). In 2021 the Hawks finished the season ranked 14th in the final NCAA D2 poll. In his collegiate coaching career, Whalley has amassed 184 wins.

Despite getting off 18 first half shots, the Hawks were held scoreless in the first 45 minutes of play. Virginia State would break the offensive stalemate when Sebastine Daniel set up Eddison Doulo for a goal in the 53rd minute.

Trailing 1-0, CU’s Sam Deacon scored the equalizer when Junior Smith found him far side.

Jeevan Purwal scored the go ahead goal in the 73rd minute when Harry Baker chipped the ball just inside the box, finding Purewal, who placed the ball just over VSU’s keeper.

Smith scored on a left-footer just 10 minutes later to give the Hawks a 3-1 lead.

Brandon Hill scored the Hawks final goal of the match just a minute later when Bradley Binns stole the ball away on a Trojan throw in. Binns crossed the top of the box to find Hill on the far side, who made good with a bullet to the back of the net, giving the Hawks the eventual 4-1 win.

The Hawks got off 38 shots in the match, led by Binns who had a team-high 7 shots, 5 of which were on goal. Robbie Delghan had 5 shots in the match.

David Agudelo subbed in goal for the Hawks just 13 minutes into the match. Agudelo posted 4 stops in the frame.

Chowan returns to the pitch on this Saturday (Sept. 14) with a road trip to Converse College. Saturday’s match marks the conference season opener for the Hawks. They will return to Murfreesboro to host Coker College in a 3 p.m. non-conference match on Sept. 18.
