Jerri Jones Duck of Harrellsville is seeking a seat on the Hertford County Board of Education during the upcoming November General Election.

Duck recently submitted the following candidate profile to the Roanoke-Chowan News-Herald where she shared why she decided to run:

“As someone who is deeply invested in the success of our community, I believe that the strength of our schools reflects the strength of our future. Our children deserve an education that empowers them to thrive, and I want to help ensure that our schools are places of opportunity, innovation, and support.

“For years I have observed both the successes and challenges facing our education system. We are fortunate to have dedicated teachers and staff, engaged parents, and bright, eager students. However, we also face issues such as gaps in achievement, boosting teacher and staff morale, and underfunding. These are challenges that cannot be solved by any one person but must be addressed by a committed and collaborative team working to serve the needs of all students.

“My decision to run for the Board of Education is rooted in four core beliefs:

  1. Every child deserves an excellent education: Regardless of their background, socioeconomic status, or learning style, each student should have access to high-quality education. I am committed to ensuring that our schools offer diverse and rigorous programs that meet the needs of all learners, from advanced students to those who need additional support.
  2. We need to support our teachers and staff: The backbone of any great school is its educators. I will advocate for resources, training and support systems that help teachers excel in their profession and feel valued in their roles. No micromanagement of adults that are working as hard as they can with what they have. When we invest in our teachers, we invest in the future of our children.
  3. Our schools should be safe, inclusive spaces: Every student should feel safe, welcomed, and respected in their learning environment. I will work toward creating policies that promote equity, reduce bullying, and foster a sense of belonging for all students.
  4. Parental involvement and communication: You must work with and include parents and/or guardians in the student’s success. Create opportunities for parents to be involved in school activities and decision-making processes. Regularly communicate with them about their child’s progress and school events. Identify and address specific barriers parents my face, such as transportation issues, work schedules, or lack of knowledge about the school system.

“I am not running for the Board of Education because I have all of the answers. I am running because I believe in the power of listening to our community and working together to find solutions that work for everyone. I believe in transparency, accountability, and the importance of making decisions based on what’s best for our students.

“I hope to earn your trust and your vote so that I can work to ensure our schools remain a place where all children can succeed. Together we can make a difference.”
