Chowan sweeps Barton in conference soccer action

MURFREESBORO – Chowan University swept Barton College in women’s and men’s soccer action here Saturday afternoon.
In the women’s match, Natasha Bailey had a goal and an assist to lead the way in a 3-1 victory, allowing Chowan to improve to 4-6-1 overall and 2-4-1 in conference play.
Bailey opened the scoring by netting a goal in the 16th minute.
Sixteen minutes later, Laura Hulme found the back of the net, off an assist from Bailey, as Chowan doubled its lead to 2-0.
Right before halftime, Abigail Simon scored for Chowan, staking the home team to a 3-0 lead at the break.
Lexis Goldberg tallied Baron’s lone goal in the 66th minute.
Chowan had a total of 20 shots in the match, compared to Barton’s 16 shots. Hulme and Lily Harrison collected four shots each.
Kirsten Peterson spent the whole 90 minutes in the net and made two saves for Chowan.
In the men’s match, Chowan dominated their rivals, collecting a 3-0 win that allowed the Hawks to improve to 4-4-2 overall and 3-2-1 in Conference Carolinas action.
The Hawks tallied 16 shots in the match while holding Barton to 6 shots over 90 minutes.
Robbie Deighan, with an assist from Sam Deacon, had his first goal of the season to put the Hawks on top less than 13 minutes into the match.
Junior Smith, off an assist from Harry Baker, found the back of the net in the 38th minute to give the Hawks a 2-0 lead heading into the halftime period.
Hlynur Fridriksson added the Hawks third goal of the match with a hard shot to the far post after Abdoulie Sanneh sent the ball into the box to an open Fridriksson.
Chase Jansen picked up the shut out in goal. Jansen posted one save in the win. Chowan’s defense also accounted for a team save.
Both teams will be back in conference action on the road on Wednesday, Oct. 16 at Francis Marion. The women kick off that doubleheader at 4:30 p.m. followed by the men at 7 p.m.
