AHOSKIE – Emily Elizabeth Brantley Hall, 91, of Jernigan Swamp Road, passed away on Wednesday, October 16, 2024 at the ECU Health Bertie Hospital in Windsor, NC following a short illness. She was surrounded by her loving family.

Emily was born in Bertie County, NC on April 14, 1933 and was the daughter of Lee Robert Brantley and Clara Harrell Brantley. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband of 60 years, William Thomas Hall; her brothers, Robert Harrell Brantley and wife Geraldine, and Edward Kyle Brantley, Sr. and wife Evelyn; in-laws, William Joseph Hall and Ada Joyner Hall; brothers-in-law, Bill Stoffregen, and Darvin Davidson.

Serving others and her love of God were very important parts of her life. From birth through her teen years, she did so at Center Grove Baptist Church, Ahoskie, NC. After marriage, she and her family served faithfully at Aulander Baptist Church in Aulander, NC where they lived until Thomas retired. Then, moving back to the family farm in Ahoskie, they moved their membership to Liberty Free Will Baptist where they were involved in all phases of the church. She served as church clerk at Liberty for 20 years and enjoyed making a joyful noise singing in the church’s choirs. She is called “Miss Emily” by the Junior Sunday School boys and girls that she taught at both churches for 50 years. She loved and had fond memories of all the children that came through her classes.

A 1950 graduate of Ahoskie High School, Emily began public work at an early age at textile plants in the towns of Woodland, NC and Ahoskie. She worked many years at Roanoke-Chowan News Herald in Ahoskie and Golden Peanut Co. in Aulander where she enjoyed and made many lifelong friends.

She enjoyed civic and volunteer work and was a member of the Aulander Women’s Club, the Aulander Rescue Squad, was a charter member of the Aulander Fire Department, and Rescue Squad Ladies Auxiliary. After retirement she took pleasure in sewing with Mars Hill Baptist Church Sewing Circle (aka “The Q Tips”) making gowns, lap robes, and adult bibs for Hospice and area nursing homes. They also made dresses for orphanage girls in Africa and Memory Bears for friends and the Trap Fire Department. She and Thomas enjoyed camping and fishing with their children and friends for many years and then gave up the camper for car and bus trips.

Left to cherish her memory are her daughter, Tommie Hall Oppegaard (Lee) of Wilmington, NC; her son, Barry Hall (Patsy) of Ahoskie; three grandchildren; Eric Oppegaard (Erica) of Celebration, FL, Amanda Hall of Ahoskie, and Paula Brabble (Beth) of Hickory, NC; two great grandsons; Owen Oppegaard and Isaac Oppegaard, both of Celebration, FL; her sister, Clara Brantley Davidson of Trap, NC; and her sister-in-law, Peggy Hall Stoffregen of Raleigh, NC. She also has numerous nieces, and nephews that call her “Aunt Sweetie” and a valued friend/former co-worker that calls her “Auntie Em” (see you later Toto).

A celebration of life funeral service will be held on Saturday, October 19, 2024, at 2 p.m. at the Liberty Free Will Baptist Church, Ahoskie, NC, with Pastor Troy Bordeaux officiating. The family will receive friends at the church one hour prior to the service and the burial will follow the service at Highland Memorial Gardens, Ahoskie, NC.

The family wishes to acknowledge with deep appreciation the expressions of kindness, love and support given in the time of grief.
