CONWAY — Operational changes planned for the Conway Post Office may effect how citizens receive their mail here.

According to Conway Town officials, effective June 1, the United States Postal Service has scheduled operational changes for the post office.

The operation changes have prompted local officials to react with a town hall meeting scheduled for 6:30 p.m. on Wednesday in the auditorium at Conway Middle School. A representative from the USPS will be in attendance to answer questions from citizens and town officials.

According to Northampton County Commission Vice Chair James Hester (District 1), after that date the mail truck will no longer deliver to the Conway Post Office.

Mail addressed to citizens who reside in the Conway area will be delivered to the Murfreesboro Post Office. The change in the truck routes will result in a delay in mail delivery as Conway postmaster will have to go pick up the mail from Murfreesboro, return with it and sort it. The same would also apply to packages delivered by USPS.

The delay in delivery for some residents may change from morning to afternoon or to the next day and town officials are concerned with how out-going mail will be handled.

In addition, the Conway Post Office status will go to an 11, which will result in the postmaster receiving a cut in pay, possibly affect staffing at the post office and future overall operations.

“The Conway Board of Commissioners has numerous questions concerning the changes that are going to take place,” town officials said in a public notice sent to the Roanoke-Chowan News-Herald. “We urge you to attend this meeting and find out how your mail delivery will be affected and what the changes will mean to our town.  This is a very important meeting and we hope to see you there.”

Hester also encourage residents to come out to the meeting if they had concerns.
