Chowan defeats Virginia State in overtime

ETTRICK, VA – Using a balanced attack that featured four players in double figures, Chowan University men’s basketball team pulled out a 96-91 overtime victory on the road here Wednesday night against Virginia State University.
The Hawks, connecting on 7-of-8 shots from the field in overtime, outscored their hosts 17-12 in the extra period to solidify their third straight win. Two of those seven made shots were three-pointers.
Chowan improves to 3-0 overall with the win while the Trojans fall to 1-2.
Daylan Askew paced the Hawks offensively after draining 11-19 from the floor, including five three pointers, for a game-high 31 points. RJ Wilson contributed a double-double with 22 points and 11 rebounds, while Aaron Ross added 13 points and seven rebounds. Cheick Traore finished with 10 points, shooting a perfect 4-4 from the field, while also grabbing 7 rebounds.
The back and forth game saw five lead changes and six ties over nearly 40 minutes of regulation play.
Virginia State trailed by three points late in the second half before knotting the game at 79-79 after Kendall Bynum hit a three pointer. Bynum’s three pointer sent the game to overtime where the Hawks took over. Chowan spread the offensive attack out with help from Askew, Wilson, Ross, and Eric Gordon Jr.
The Hawks hit 3-of-4 from the foul line in overtime, with Dominique Bailey icing the game with two made free throws as the game clock wound down.
Overall, the Hawks hit shots at a 50% clip (30-60) and made 44% (12-27) from beyond the three-point arc.
Chowan will make the short drive to Elizabeth City State on Saturday, Nov. 16 for a non-conference matchup against another former CIAA opponent.
