NAGS HEAD – The Town of Nags Head’s Police and Fire Departments responded to a serious incident on the evening of Friday, Nov. 29 involving two pedestrians who were struck by a vehicle while in a designated crosswalk at 7228 South Virginia Dare Trail.
At 5:38 p.m., a 911 call was received reporting the incident. Officers were dispatched at 5:39 p.m. and the first officer arrived on the scene at 5:40 p.m.
Both victims, identified as 71-year-old and 69-year-old residents of Sunbury, NC, were airlifted to Sentara Norfolk General Hospital. As of the morning of Nov. 30, both individuals are expected to survive.
Witness statements, officer analysis, and video evidence confirm that the couple was using the designated crosswalk when the incident occurred.
The driver, a 63-year-old female from Columbia, NC, was cited for failure to yield to pedestrians in a crosswalk. There is no indication that speed or impairment were factors in the incident, which is still under investigation.
The Town of Nags Head urges all drivers and pedestrians to exercise caution and remain vigilant, especially during the early evening hours when visibility may be reduced.
