JACKSON – Coffee lovers in and around the Northampton County capital city will soon have a new destination to enjoy their freshly brewed beverage.
Jefferson Street Coffee Co. (located at 122 West Jefferson Street in the downtown business district) is the brainchild of Clay and Rachel Revelle, husband and wife who are natives of Northampton County.
“We were hoping to be open by the second week of January, but realistically it will be probably be around the first of February,” explained Clay. “But I’d rather not rush things and be 100 percent ready to welcome and serve our customers on day one and moving forward.”
Once open, business hours will be 7 am until 4 pm on Monday through Friday and 8 am until 2 pm on Saturday.
Other than coffee, the business will also feature pre-packaged food items and breakfast items such as bagels, croissants, and muffins. There will be other beverage items, such as milkshakes, fruit smoothies, and refreshers, along with ice cream.
As for the main attraction, the business will offer drip coffee, espresso, latte’s, cappuccino, frappe, and hot chocolate.
Clay Revelle, a well-known local realtor, purchased the building at 122 West Jefferson Street in 2015. Ironically, the space had once served as the office of fellow realtor Mary Parks.
Revelle rented the space to a barbering school, one that transitioned to another location in August of this year.
“That’s when Rachel decided to open a coffee shop there,” Clay said. “The idea came about when we went with friends to Littleton to see all they have done to transform that town. One stop was at Lake Gaston Coffee. We talked with them and that got us to thinking about a new use for the building we own in downtown Jackson.”
“I love coffee,” said Rachel. “I wanted to do something special with our building in Jackson. When the coffee idea came up, I knew that was it.”
There’s also a bit of sentimental value tagged to the new business venture.
“When my mom saw the building, she suggested that it would be perfect for a coffee shop,” Rachel said, referencing Sheryl Davis Watson who passed away two months ago. “Now that we’re doing this, it brings good memories of her.”
The Revelles have chosen Dilworth Coffee Company of Raleigh to supply their roasted beans as well as to offer sound advice.
“They do build-outs, so they are helping us through the process and the training,” Clay noted. “Plus they purchase coffee beans from all over the world and roast them, per order, in Raleigh.”
Customers can also purchase Dilworth Coffee beans at the new Jackson business to take home.
The interior of Jefferson Street Coffee Co. will feature a cozy atmosphere, complete with a large couch along with several tables and chairs and maybe a couple of bar stools at the counter.
“We don’t want to crowd the available space; we want our customers to feel like they are at home and enjoying their time with family and friends,” Clay said, adding that wi-fi will be offered as well.
Other than the obvious (the couple already owning a building there), Clay Revelle was quick to answer the question of why Jackson was chosen for this particular business venture.
“Jackson is a quaint little town, rich in history,” he noted. “It’s small town America, perfect for a variety of mom-and-pop businesses like a coffee shop. Jackson has a lot of potential. I’ve heard there’s a bakery coming soon. While that may be competition for us, it gives those who work here in county government and the town’s residents some options. I’m all about moving the town and the area forward.”
“We want to give back to the community,” chimed in Rachel. “What better way than to invest in a business that is not only unique to the town, but also provide jobs.”
