Askew becomes Chowan’s D2 career scoring leader

MURFREESBORO – Chowan University needed every one of Daylan Askew’s record-setting 30 points here Saturday afternoon to outduel the University of Mt. Olive in a Conference Carolinas men’s basketball game.
Askew’s point total made him Chowan’s all-time D2 scorer with 1,309 points, surpassing Kyree Bethel in the process, as the Hawks defeated the visiting Trojans, 109-104.
Holding a 60-56 advantage at halftime, Chowan led by as many as 14 points (78-64) with just over 13 minutes left in the game before Mt. Olive mounted a rally. The Trojans chipped away at their deficit, finally drawing even at 93-93 with five minutes to go.
Thirteen seconds later, Mt. Olive took the lead (96-93) on Lureon Walker’s three-pointer.
It was Chowan’s turn to rally and the Hawks went on an 8-2 spurt, capped by RJ Wilson’s layup for a 101-98 lead with 2:49 left.
After Raul Perez tied the score at 101-101 with his three-point basket with 1:35 remaining, Askew reeled off four unanswered points (a basket and two free throws) as Chowan grabbed the lead for-keeps at 105-101 with 34 ticks left on the clock.
Mt. Olive got to with 105-104 thanks to a three-pointer from Redford Dunton with 26 seconds left, but Wilson hit all four of his free throws down the stretch as the Hawks held on for the win.
The Hawks controlled the game inside, scoring 48 points in the paint and adding 18 second-chance points off 15 offensive rebounds. Their transition game was on fire, racking up 25 fast-break points. The bench stepped up with 23 points, led by Damerius Summers’ 15 points on 7-9 shooting.
Eric Gordon Jr. and Aaron Ross both delivered career-best performances in the game. Gordon scored a career-high 14 points, while Ross exploded for 22 points. Wilson finished with 16 points.
Chowan shot a sizzling 61.7% from the field (37-of-60) and also connected on more than 50 percent its attempts from three-point range (12-of-23).
Chuck Traore led the Hawks on the boards, hauling down 10 rebounds. Wilson had six rebounds.
The Hawks (5-4 overall and 2-1 in the conference) will be back on the court on Tuesday, Dec. 17 at North Greenville. Tip-off is at 3 p.m.
