Lady Bears roll past arch rivals

WINDSOR – The best contest to watch in any sport is a good ole’ rivalry game. Those that bring a special energy, and camaraderie along with a packed venue.

Well, the longtime rivalry the between Hertford County Bears and the Bertie Falcons always included those mentioned ingredients and more.

The Lady Bears unleashed an offensive and defensive onslaught here Friday night that started right after the tipoff and lasted throughout all four quarters, landing Hertford County a generous 62-14 win.

The Lady Bears won the tipoff and went to work immediately, rattling off four quick baskets for an 8-0 lead with 4:22 left on the clock. Bertie interrupted the Bears run making one of two from the free-throw line.

As a matter of fact, all three points scored by Bertie in the first period were at the charity strip. Meanwhile, the Bears generated another seven points, including a three-ball by Brooklyn White to end the first frame with the visitors on top, 15-3.

The Bears pesky defensive disrupted the Falcons offense, making it hard for Bertie to score. But the Falcons consistent attempts reaped benefits allowing them to score a total of six points in the second quarter, ending the half with the Bears leading 28-9.

The Bears started the second half on fire. Hertford County went on 27-point excursion. This lasted from the beginning of the third quarter until the last two minutes of the game. This offensive outburst included four straight trifectas from White, and another three ball by Janiah Everette mixed in with a few baskets from the field.

The running clock rule was invoked with less than three minutes left to play in the third quarter. This scoring landslide settled to a 58-11 Bears lead.

Due to the running clock along with multiple turnovers and missed baskets, the fourth quarter was short live and the game ended 62-14 in favor of the Bears.

White led the way for the Lady Bears, scoring a game-high 21 points. Everette also scored in double figures, finishing with 13 points. Jameilya Lewis nearly reached double digits as she added eight points to the winning total.

Bertie was led by Salice Gould (5 points) and Armani Bridgette (4).
