BIRMINGHAM, AL – Dr. Tina Evans Wood passed away on December 19, 2024, surrounded by her family in her home.

Tina was born in Ahoskie, North Carolina on October 21, 1972. She was the firstborn child of Austine O. and Ernest L. Evans. Tina attended the public schools of Hertford County, North Carolina and graduated high school from the North Carolina School of Science and Mathematics in Durham.

As a teenager, Tina was very active in the youth program of First Baptist Church of Ahoskie. She was a member of the youth handbell group and a pianist for the youth choir. In addition to being an accomplished pianist, she was an avid runner and enjoyed time at the beach with her family. She had a strong Christian faith that endured from her early years throughout her life.

After graduating from high school, Tina attended Wake Forest University as a Poteat Scholar. She graduated from Wake Forest with a Bachelor of Science degree Magna Cum Laude before enrolling in the Wake Forest University School of Medicine. Following her graduation from medical school, Dr. Wood completed a residency, internship, and fellowship at the University of Alabama at Birmingham, specializing in hematology and medical oncology. She was board certified in internal medicine and medical oncology.

Dr. Wood married Dr. William C. Wood, III, and they had two children, William C. Wood, IV and Caroline Evans Wood. Her children were the loves of her life and she cherished being their mother.

In her professional career, Dr. Wood became a widely-respected oncologist, known not only for her professional skills but also for her compassion and empathy for her patients and their families. In addition to receiving referrals from respected physicians throughout the region, there are many stories of patients and their families specifically requesting “Dr. Tina” and of their remembering her care and compassion that went well beyond medical treatment. Her family, friends, and colleagues all recall that her capacity to deeply and meaningfully care for others, particularly in their times of greatest need, was unmatched.

Dr. Wood is survived by her children, William Wood and Caroline Wood of Birmingham, Alabama; her parents, Austine and Ernie Evans of Ahoskie, North Carolina; and her brother, E. Bradley Evans and wife Elizabeth W. Evans, and their children, Meade and Clara Evans, all of Greenville, North Carolina.

Celebration of life services will be held at later dates in Birmingham and in Ahoskie.

In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to the Evans Family Poteat Scholarship at Wake Forest University, the American Cancer Society, or the charity of the donor’s choice.
