AHOSKIE – Barbara Bradley Matthews, a beloved member of her community, passed away peacefully at her home, on December 19, 2024, at the age of 88. Born on July 27, 1936, in Northampton County, North Carolina, she lived a life filled with gratitude, joy, and devotion to her family, faith, and passions.
Barbara was always thankful and considered herself blessed, embracing each day with a heart full of appreciation. She cherished her time reading, crafting, learning new things, and immersing herself in music. A dedicated member of Menola Baptist Church, Barbara shared her musical talents by playing the piano for 55 years across multiple congregations, including Hickory Chapel, Center Grove Baptist, Earlys Baptist, and Menola Baptist. She was deeply engaged in church activities, devoted to her faith and her community. Barbara’s warmth, kindness, and unwavering faith left an indelible mark on all who knew her. She will be dearly missed and lovingly remembered.
Family was the cornerstone of Barbara’s life. She loved her family wholeheartedly and cherished the moments spent with them. Although she did not wish to leave them, she found peace in the Lord’s embrace, trusting in His plans as He brought her home.
Barbara was preceded in death by her parents, Winfred C. and Vida Powell Bradley; her siblings, brother Winfred E. Bradley and sisters Viola Futrell and Margaret Johnson; as well as her daughter Vicki G. Harden, grandson Clint Boseman, and granddaughter Kelly Greene Cutright.
She is survived by her devoted husband, Henry C. Matthews, and her loving children, Lisa Ann Greene of Ahoskie, Jeffrey Matthews (Tywanna) of Ahoskie, and Judy Boseman (Wayne) of Macclesfield, NC. Her legacy continues through her cherished grandchildren: Shelby Matthews, Daniel Boseman, Katie Matthews, Amanda Lee Cutright (Josh), Kayla Boseman, Aaron Cutright (Elizabeth), Madison Matthews, and Alyssa Scott; and her treasured great-grandchildren: Tyler Reason, Kaleigh Cutright, Zayne Cutright, Cody Cutright, Kassie Byrum, Jaylynn Williams, Kingston Williams, Kai Cutright, Coraline Cutright, and Clint Boseman. Barbara is also survived by her sister, Kay Holland (Joel), along with numerous nieces, nephews, extended family members, and friends.
The family invites friends and relatives to celebrate Barbara’s life. They will receive visitors at the home at any time. A celebration of life service will take place on Saturday, December 28, 2024, at 11 a.m. at Garrett-Sykes Funeral Service – Ahoskie Chapel, with Rev. Willie McLawhorn officiating. Interment will follow at Highland Memorial Gardens in Ahoskie, NC.
