CONWAY, NC – Clement Lassiter Sumner died at his home Monday, December 23, 2024 at the age of 84.

Known affectionately by everyone as “Hun”, he was born October 17, 1940, the 7th of 10 children to the late Charlie Hoggard Sumner and Josie Lassiter Sumner on the family farm in Dusty Hill, just outside of Lasker. He played and worked on the family farm until he met his bride, Linda Lane. He was so smitten in fact, that when his car broke down and would only drive in reverse gear, he drove it in reverse to visit Linda miles away near her home at Long’s Store.

He and Linda married and started life in Atlanta, Georgia where Hun drove a bus for Atlanta Transit Company. Upon returning home to Dusty Hill, Hun went to work for Odom Prison and later at the Northampton County Sheriff’s Office before returning back to Odom Prison where he retired as Captain after 30 years of service, all while farming on the side.

Hun was an avid woodworker and many of his pieces fill the homes of his family and friends. Prior to its closure, he spent most weekday mornings at Dicks Store in Lasker with the old men drinking a diet Mountain Dew while enjoying a pack of nabs and solving the world’s problems. During hunting season, he was often by the fire at Dusty Hill Gun Club, conversing with his family and friends.

He spent many Saturday mornings traveling to farm auction sales. He was known to buy a piece of equipment and flip it before he could even leave the sale.

Doolittle Mill Pond was Hun’s favorite fishing hole.

Hun’s presence will be missed by those that knew and loved him.

He was preceded in death by his parents and six siblings: Everette Sumner, Mattie Sumner Morgan, Bernice Sumner Lynch, Edward “Bitty Brother” Sumner, Lonnie “Tug” Sumner, and James “Sug” Sumner.

He is survived by his wife of 64 years, Linda, of the home; brothers: Ted “Pig” Sumner, and David “Tiny” Sumner and wife, Irmgard, all of Conway, and Leroy “Bay” Sumner and wife, Sandra, of Covington, Georgia; special nephew, Neal Sumner and wife, Joyce, of Lasker, special great niece, Crystal Sumner Mann and husband, Matt, of Conway; special great nephew, Michael Sumner of Lasker; special great great niece, Olive Mann, along with many nieces, nephews, great nieces, great nephews, extended family and friends.

The family wishes to thank Gentiva Hospice for the care provided to Hun, especially Baylee Clark, for her professional support and love.

In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to Lasker Volunteer Fire Department, 112 West Church Street, Lasker, NC 27845.
