Chowan edges Francis Marion in overtime

FLORENCE, SC – Yasmine Brown’s tip in of her own missed shot beat the buzzer as Chowan University defeated Francis Marion, 68-66, here Wednesday night in a Conference Carolinas women’s basketball game.
With the win, Chowan keeps their unbeaten streak alive at 9-0 overall and 6-0 on the conference. The streak matches the longest winning stretch for the program since the 2004-05 season.
Yasmine Brown and Desiree Askew both finished the night with 18 points. Brown added eight rebounds while Askew contributed six boards.
Meara Carter recorded 12 points, seven rebounds, four assists, and two steals.
Defensively, Nyeisha Savage led the way with nine total rebounds, three blocks, and a steal. Kaleah Boykin contributed with three steals, one block, and four rebounds.
In a tightly contested game, it appeared that Chowan would win in regulation as Brown connected on a jump shot with eight seconds left for a 58-56 lead. But Kennedi Simmons hit the game-tying shot for Francis Marion at the buzzer, sending the game into overtime tied at 58-all.
Francis Marion built a four-point lead (62-58) inside the first minute of overtime.
Highlighted by a basket each from Brown and Danea Mackey, Chowan rallied to take a 63-62 lead with 1:48 left in the extra session. Chowan maintained the lead (66-64) with 18 seconds left, but Francis Marion tied it at 66-66 on a basket from Simmons with five ticks left on the clock.
Chowan’s final possession saw Brown miss a jump shot, but she grabbed the offensive rebound and scored the game-winner as the horn sounded.
The Hawks’ defense was solid, forcing 21 turnovers. The team grabbed 45 total rebounds, including 12 offensive boards and 33 defensive rebounds, leading to 15 second-chance points. Chowan dominated inside, scoring 42 points in the paint, while also adding seven fast-break points.
The Hawks will head to Young Harris College on Saturday, Jan. 11 for a Conference Carolinas matchup at 2 p.m.
