With the exception of the southeastern coastal counties, eastern North Carolina and southside Virginia are under a Winter Storm Watch, effective Friday evening through Saturday afternoon.

The National Weather Service Office in Wakefield, VA advises that heavy mixed precipitation is possible. Total snow accumulations between 1 and 3 inches and ice accumulations around one tenth of an inch are possible.

NCDOT crews are out today (Thursday) pre-treating roads in the Roanoke-Chowan area and elsewhere. However, roads will become slick due to the winter weather.

Expect clouds to increase on Friday where the high temperature is expected to be in the upper 30s. The snow is expected to arrive around midnight Friday followed by a period of snow, possibly mixed with freezing rain and sleet, between 1-4 a.m. The low will be around 27. Snow and sleet accumulation of 1 to 3 inches is possible.

The snow/ice mix will remain into Saturday morning, but the temperature is expected to rise to 43 degrees, turning whatever moisture that remains with this weather system into all rain.

Skies will clear later on Saturday where the overnight low will be in the mid-teens. Sunday’s forecast calls for clear skies with a high near 40 and a low of 19.
