The snow is on its way.
As of this morning (Friday), the National Weather Service Office in Wakefield, VA upgraded its weather alert to a Winter Storm Warning for the majority of the eastern North Carolina and eastern Virginia regions.
With the exception of Bertie, all counties here in the local Roanoke-Chowan area are under the Winter Storm Warning. Bertie, along with the counties to its east and south, are under a Winter Weather Advisory.
The counties in the warning area are predicted to receive 2-to-4 inches of snow and ice accumulations around two tenths of an inch.
Roads across the region will become slippery. If you must travel, keep a flashlight, food, and water in your vehicle in case of an emergency.
In North Carolina, go to http://DriveNC.gov for road information. In Virginia, call 511 for road information.
The warning is in effect from 7 pm today until 1 pm Saturday.
If the air aloft warms to above 32 degrees, the falling precipitation is likely to change over from snow to sleet or freezing rain. It becomes all rain once the air aloft and the air temperature at the mid and lower levels of the atmosphere rise to greater than 32 degrees.
The snow or mixed precipitation is expected to continue into early Saturday morning. Little or no ice accumulation is expected at that time. New snow accumulation of less than a half inch is possible.
Saturday’s high will reach 42 degrees by afternoon. Skies will eventually clear, causing the overnight low to drop to the mid teens.
Sunday’s forecast calls for clear skies with a high of 39 and an overnight low of 18.
Temps are predicted to rise to the mid 40s on Monday under sunny skies.
