WINDSOR – Josh Velez tossed a three-hitter here Friday night as Currituck County High School topped Bertie High 12-1.
The loss to their Northeastern Coastal conference foe eliminated the Falcons from playoff contention.
“We didn’t come out ready to play,” said Bertie High baseball boss Randy Whitaker. “We know Currituck will hit the ball. We didn’t make plays defensively.”
The Knights scored in every inning of the game, starting with two in the top of the first as they grabbed an early lead.
Currituck added two more in the top of the second and led the Falcons 4-0.
Bertie got its only run in the bottom of the second when Kyle Hughes walked and moved to third on a Cody White double to right-center field. Dylan White walked to load the bases before Hughes scored on a wild pitch.
That was all for the Falcons, however, and the Knights added three runs in the fourth and four in the fifth to take the 12-1 victory.
In the bottom of the fifth frame, Cody White singled. With one out, Matthew Hoggard drew a walk, but a double play ended the game.
“I was pleased with our effort tonight,” said Currituck skipper Justin Hill. “We have had some tough losses this year.”
Cody White led the Falcons with a 2-for-2 effort at the plate. Zeek Williams had Bertie’s only other hit.
Dakota Young suffered the loss on the mound, going all five innings.
Bertie dropped to 3-17 overall and 0-11 in the league. Their final game of the year comes tomorrow night (Friday) when they host archrival Hertford County.
