Local roads are passable, but R-C area emergency management officials advise that they are icy.

There are reports of up to four inches of snow that fell locally in last night’s winter storm. That has prompted Bertie, Hertford and Northampton county officials to close local government offices today (Wednesday). All local public schools, to include Gates County, and private schools are closed today as well.

“DOT is out this morning plowing roads. Even where they have been, I wouldn’t recommend driving over 30 mph and avoiding quick stops,” said Northampton County Fire Marshal Chris Collier. “If all possible, I would recommend staying off the roads unless you have to report to work or if there’s an emergency.”

Hertford County Emergency Management Director Patrick Dilday warned that due to today’s extremely cold weather, local roads will not thaw out.

“It’s not going to get above freezing today,” Dilday said, noting a daytime high of 28 degrees. “The hard packed snow on our roads will be difficult to remove. Whatever is left on the roads will stick around until we get some sunshine and temperatures rise above freezing.”

Tonight’s low temperature is forecasted at 11 degrees.

Cloudy skies are predicted on Thursday, with a high of 36 degrees. Friday will “warm” into the low 40s under mostly sunny skies.
