AHOSKIE – Jordan Jones had a stellar season with the Bears in 2010-11.

The Hertford County High School senior led his squad to the Northeastern Coastal Conference championship and, in the process, was named District 1 3-A Player of the Year and All-Roanoke-Chowan Player of the Year.

That was just part of a four-year standout career for the Bears that led to his signing with St. Augustine’s College earlier this week.

“I think it’s a perfect fit for him,” HCHS basketball boss Charles Simmons said. “I know the coach personally and I think he will fit into the system. I feel good about his choice.

“Coach Spencer will have his best interest in mind and look after him over the next four years,” he said.

Jones said he was eager to head to St. Augustine’s and that he felt good about his choice.

“I feel like the school is a good fit,” Jones said. “I like the basketball program and the coaches seemed like they really wanted me.”

Jones considered Catawba College, Elizabeth City State University and Winston-Salem State University before deciding on St. Aug.

He said that he was confident he could earn a spot on the court early.

“I feel like if I go and work hard and do what I’m supposed to athletically and academically, I can get some early playing time,” he said.

The HCHS senior said he began playing basketball in elementary school but really started to take it seriously in middle school.

“It’s always been a dream of mine to get a scholarship,” Jones said. “Since middle school, it is all I have thought about.”

Simmons said Jones had worked hard during his four years and that had allowed him to make the varsity squad since his freshman season.

“We’ve only had a handful of players make the varsity as a freshman,” the coach said. “He has developed over the last four years and had an outstanding senior year.”

Simmons said he felt like Jones’ great asset was his work ethic.

“I think his strongest asset is his work ethic,” the coach said. “He’s a winner – he loves to compete and I think he will take that to St. Aug. The coaching staff will love him for that.”

Jones was named All-Northeastern Coastal Conference during his junior and senior years, was named All-District by the North Carolina Coaches Association twice and made the All-Roanoke-Chowan Team as both a junior and a senior. He was Player of the Year in the region this year.
