WINDSOR – Bertie High School edged Gates County here last week 3-1.
Bertie’s Courtney Dunlow gave up just one hit during the contest while Gates County’s Hillary Bunch allowed just three as the two battled in a non-conference softball affair.
The Lady Falcons got two runs in the fourth inning to take the lead.
Jody Mizelle and Christie Brown drew back-to-back walks and then were bunted over by Dunlow. Caroline White then drew a walk to load the bases.
Terri-Lynn Smith singled to right-center field to score both Mizelle and Brown and give the Lady Falcons the early lead.
In the top of the sixth inning, Sarah Askew walked to get the inning started. A bunt moved her to second and a groundout moved her to third. Askew scored on an Erica Bradley RBI-triple. With Bradley on third, Ashley Brown drew a walk, but a pop-out ended the threat.
Bertie got their final run in the sixth inning when Brown and Dunlow had back-to-back singles. Brown scored on a sacrifice fly by White to establish the final.
Dunlow pitched all seven innings for the Lady Falcons, allowing one hit and walking three while striking out seven.
Bunch went six innings, allowing three hits and three walks while striking out three.
The win improved the Lady Falcons to 8-1 overall while Gates County dropped to 6-3.
