ASKEWVILLE – The Ahoskie Christian School Lady Warriors bowed out.
The ACS varsity girls dropped a 48-35 decision to Temple Christian School in an elimination game during the North Carolina Christian Athletic Conference (NCCAC) state playoffs last weekend.
Senior Sarah Calderado led Ahoskie Christian’s efforts with 12 points while Bridget Babb added eight. Ella Wooten led Temple with 21 points.
While the contest ended the Ahoskie Christian School season, it started well as the local squad was able to grab a 16-12 lead after one quarter.
Temple’s Ella Wooten started the game with a hoop, but freshman Lauren Lassiter answered for the Lady Warriors. After another Wooten bucket, Ahoskie got two free throws from Calderado and a field goal from Jessica Simmons as they grabbed a 6-4 edge.
Over the next few minutes, the game was tied at six, eight and 10 points each. Calderado then gave Ahoskie the lead with a pair of hoops that gave the Lady Warriors a 14-10 edge. They held that same four-point lead (16-12) after one quarter thanks to another Calderado hoop.
Wooten scored the first two hoops of the second quarter to tie the contest at 16-all. An exchange of hoops left the scored tied again at 18 and 20 before Temple took the lead for good on a Ruth Byrd hoop. Glynnis Hagins then added another score for the Lady Tigers as they took a 24-20 lead into the locker room.
Wooten and Meredith Stephenson had back-to-back hoops to open the third quarter as Temple edged ahead 28-20.
Babb then scored five unanswered to get Ahoskie back within three (28-25). Unfortunately, Wooten took over the quarter scoring six of the final 11 points for her team. Alayna Conner added a hoop and Byrd a triple.
Babb had another three-pointer to try to keep Ahoskie in the contest, but Temple led 39-29 after three quarters.
The Lady Warriors were able to get within nine midway through the final quarter on a free throw by Simmons, but got no closer as Temple went on to the victory.
