MENOLA – An early morning accident claimed one life here Saturday.
Joshua Richard Baggett, 23, of Woodland was killed when the car he was operating struck a bridge and flipped into a creek.
According to a report filed by North Carolina Highway Patrol Trooper J.K. Jones, Baggett was traveling north on S.R. 1150 near the Jim Hardy Road in a 1996 Chevrolet passenger car when he lost control of the vehicle. The vehicle travelled off the right shoulder of the road which apparently caused Baggett to overcorrect.
The car reportedly slid sideways, partially reentering the roadway and then collided with an old wooden bridge. The car then flipped and landed in the creek below.
According to the report, Baggett was ejected from the vehicle and was later pronounced dead at the scene.
Highway Patrol Sgt. M.D. Warren said the report indicated there were extensive damages to the bridge.
The death was the fourth in Troop A, District II and the third in Hertford County in 2009.
