Riding a light southwest wind, smoke is drifting northward from a wildfire in Pender County.

Couple that with temperatures approaching the triple digits, today (Wednesday) will pose a dual problem for those who typically work outdoors.

Despite the fact that the National Weather Service has excluded the Roanoke-Chowan area counties from an air quality alert, the combination of high heat and light smoke will make today an unpleasant one to be outside.

NWS officials expect the wind to increase to 10-to-20 mph by noon or early afternoon, aiding the dissipation and dispersion of the smoke. That wasn’t the case on Tuesday where smoke was reported throughout the local area. It was heavier in some areas of Northampton County.

The smoke will be replaced by heat. Today’s high is forecasted at 97 degrees, with heat index values as high as 105.

The smoke-heat combo prompted NWS officials to suggest that individuals who are sensitive to air quality issues should use caution through tonight, limiting outdoor exposure.

Meanwhile, motorists are urged to use caution when traveling in smoky areas where visibilities can change

rapidly.

Isolated to scattered thunderstorms are possible, mainly late in the day. Any thunderstorm could contain strong, gusty winds and very heavy rain. Thunderstorms, some producing gusty winds and heavy rain, are also in the forecast for Thursday and Friday. The high both days is forecasted in the low to mid 90’s.
