EDENTON – All is well with the Bear Nation.

Despite 117 yards in penalties, Hertford County High School was able to overcome the yellow laundry tossed in their direction here last night where the Bears snapped a two-game slide with a 28-14 win over Edenton.

The win evened the Bears conference record at 1-1 while the team improved to 5-2 overall.

Locked in a 14-14 stalemate late in the third quarter, the Bears were finally able to put away a pesky Edenton squad.

The go-ahead touchdown came with 3:59 left in the third quarter where Markee White struck paydirt on a four-yard run. That capped an eight-play, 68-yard drive highlighted by White, who had five carries on that march for 52 yards.

Hertford County sealed the win in the fourth quarter with another long, clock-eating drive. This one came after forcing an Edenton punt. Taking over at their 20 yardline, the Bears flexed their offensive muscle and took seven plays to cover 80 yards. Shea Tann did most of the legwork on the drive, toting the pigskin three times for 44 yards, including his 12-yard scamper to the endzone. Ron Gatling added the conversion run to account for the 28-14 finale with 8:36 left in the game.

The Bears were seemingly en route to an easy win over the home-standing Aces, scoring the games first two touchdowns to build a 14-0 lead late in the second quarter.

Whites five-yard TD run on the third play of the game and Richard Burns PAT staked the Bears to a quick 7-0 lead just 61 seconds into the contest. Gatlings 51-yard run set-up the touchdown.

HCHS extended their lead to 14-0 with 1:51 left before halftime thanks to a 72-yard, 11-play march capped by Antonio Vaughans 31-yard scoring run and Burns PAT.

Edenton did manage to steal some momentum shortly before halftime as the Aces scored with just 19 ticks left on the second quarter clock. That touchdown came courtesy of Niko Capeharts six-yard run followed by Corey Sackrisons PAT, making it a 14-7 game at the break.

The Aces tied the score at 14-14 on Capeharts seven-yard TD run and Sackrisons PAT at the 8:01 mark of the third quarter.

Hertford County finished the game with 430 yards of total offense, 423 of which came on the ground. Gatling (22 carries, 172 rushing yards) and White (13-119) both broke the century mark on the ground.

The Bears travel to Currituck on Friday (Oct. 10) for their next Northeastern Coastal Conference game.
