CREEKSVILLE – That freshman has some game.

Northampton County High School – East freshman hurler Corrie Bridgers put on a pitching clinic here Wednesday afternoon and in the process helped lead her team to a thumping of previously unbeaten conference foe Durham School of the Arts.

Behind Bridgers’ five-hit performance, the Lady Rams took a key Tar-Roanoke Conference softball victory 13-3 as they improved to 8-3 in the league.

&uot;I hope we’ll use this as a launching pad for what is ahead of us,&uot; Rams’ skipper John Kisic said. &uot;Now we know what we’re capable of.&uot;

The Rams jumped out of the gate, scoring two runs in the first, three in the second and two more in the third.

Sophomore Mindy Drewette started the first inning with a single. Lou Anne Flythe then singled as well, putting runners at first and third. Drewette scored when Bridgers reached on an error and Flythe scored when Nikki Turner reached on an error to give Northampton-East a 2-0 lead.

The Rams padded that advantage in the second when Alicia Piland started the inning with a single. She scored when Drewette tripled. Amanda Bethel’s double during the next at-bat plated Drewette. Flythe then singled home Bethel to give East a 5-0 lead.

Durham scored three runs in the top of the third. They managed four hits during the inning and had one hit batter.

Unfortunately for the visiting team, Bridgers shut them down from there, sitting down nine of the next 10 batters she faced.

Meanwhile, the offense was clicking for Northampton. They scored two runs in the third inning after Bridgers and Turner reached via singles. One scored on a Jessica Price RBI-fielder’s choice and the other scored on a wild pitch to give East a 7-3 lead.

Jo Ann Rose singled to start the fourth and went to second when Drewette reached on a passed ball. She took third when Bethel drew a base on balls and scored on a wild pitch.

East added four runs in the fifth frame.

Lacey Hilliard and Piland had back-to-back singles to get the inning started. They went to third and second respectively on a Rose groundout. Drewette doubled both runs home before scoring herself on a Bethel RBI-single. Flythe plated Bethel when she reached on an error to give East a 12-3 lead.

The game ended when Northampton scored a run in the sixth inning.

Turner doubled and went to third on a Price sacrifice bunt. She scored on Hilliard’s RBI-single that sent the Rams to victory.

On the day, Bridgers gave up just four hits while striking out seven and giving up no walks.

Offensively, Drewette (3-for-4) and Bethel (2-for-3) led the way for the Lady Rams. Flythe was 1-for-4 with two RBIs while Turner was 2-for-4 with two RBIs. Hilliard had three RBIs, including the game winner, during her 2-for-4 performance.

The Rams stand 11-4-1 overall heading into Tuesday’s 4:30 home date with Louisburg.
