Hattie S. Bond

KELFORD n Hattie Sanderlin Bond, 95, a native of Bertie County, died August 25, 2008 in Petersburg, Va.

Mrs. Bond was a member of Conoconary Missionary Baptist Church.

Survivors include her daughters, Rosa Garris of Petersburg and Maggie Savage of New York; sons, Jordan Bond of Petersburg and George Bond of Richmond; sisters, Rebecca Speller of Windsor and Arlene Morales of Aulander; 18 grandchildren; 37 great-grandchildren; and 27 great-great-grandchildren.

A funeral will be conducted at 3 p.m. Sunday at Conoconary Missionary Baptist Church, Aulander, by the Rev. Jeffrey Reads. Burial will be in Aulander Cemetery.

Charles Thomas “Chuck” Nelson, III

Funeral Mass for Charles Thomas &uot;Chuck&uot; Nelson, III, 28, will be celebrated 11:00 am Saturday at St. Joseph Catholic Church.  Farewell Prayers and Final Commendation will be 3:00 pm Sunday in Cedar Grove Cemetery, Newport, NC.  Visitation will follow at St. James United Methodist Church following the service.  The Rosary will be recited 6:00 pm Friday with visitation until 8:00 pm at Dunbar Funeral Home, Devine Street Chapel, Columbia, SC.

 Mr. Nelson died Tuesday, August 26, 2008.  Born in New Bern, NC, he was the son of Charles Thomas &uot;Tommy&uot; Nelson and Trudy Garner Nelson.  He was a 1998 graduate of New Bern High School, where he played baseball as well as American Legion Baseball.  He also graduated from St. Andrews Presbyterian College, Laurinburg, NC, where he was a pitcher on the baseball team.

Formerly employed with Gallo Wineries, Mr. Nelson was district sales manager for Republic National Distributing Company.  He enjoyed the ocean and playing golf.  Mr. Nelson was a member of St. Joseph Catholic Church.

Surviving are his wife, Courtney Moore Nelson and their expected son, Charles Thomas &uot;Chase&uot; Nelson, IV; parents, Charles Thomas &uot;Tommy&uot; Nelson, Jr. and Trudy Garner Nelson of New Bern, NC; sister and brother-in-law, Tracy and Jeff Howell of Morehead City, NC; niece and nephews, Madison and Jacob Graybill; aunts and uncles, Eddie and Marty Green, Dianne and Skip Johnson, Ed and Joanne Nelson, Dale and Nancy Nelson and Dennis Nelson; cousins, Joe Johnson and Jennifer Nelson; father-in-law, R. Thomas Moore of Columbia and brother-in-law, Robert Thomas Moore, Jr. of Columbia.

Mark Myrick

COMO n Mark Myrick, 61, a native of Hertford County, died August 22, 2008 at Roanoke-Chowan Hospital, Ahoskie.

Survivors include his daughter, Connie Bowser of Como; his sister, Edna Carter of Washington; and three grandchildren.

Myrick was retired from Severn Peanut Company.

Services will be conducted at 2 p.m. Saturday at Mt. Sinai Baptist Church, Como.

Burial will be held in Newsom, Va. Hunter’s Funeral Home is in charge.

James B. Moore

AHOSKIE n James B. “Buddy” Moore, 94, a native of Hertford County, died August 26, 2008 at Albemarle Hospital, Elizabeth City.

He was a member of New Ahoskie Baptist Church.

Survivors include two daughters, Vonnie Roberts and Ida Mason; one son, James E. Moore; and 21 grandchildren.

Services will be conducted at 3 p.m. Saturday by the Rev. Paul Moore. Burial will be in the Drake Memorial Cemetery, Sunbury, Tuesday. Hunter’s Funeral Home is in charge.

Edith Outlaw

MURFREESBORO – Edith Outlaw, 65, died August 29, 2008 at Deloatch’s Rest Home.

Services are incomplete at this time. Hunter’s Funeral Home is in charge.

Antoinette Blowe

AULANDER -Antoinette Blowe Blowe age 93 of the 900 Block Hwy 561 West, Aulander, died Friday, August 29, 2008 at Guardian Care of Ahoskie. She was born in Hertford County on June 15, 1915, the daughter of the late Albert Julian Blowe and Helen Rose Blowe. She was married to the late Luther Wesley  Blowe Sr.

She was a homemaker and a very active member of St. John Baptist Church where she loved singing in the choir.

A Celebration of her life service will be held Sunday, August 31, 2008 at 3 PM at St. John Baptist Church. Burial will follow in Ahoskie Cemetery. Rev. Gilbert Crawford and Rev. Woody Copeland will officiate.

Left to cherish her memory are her children, daughters Shirley Blowe Waters of Powellsville and Ann Blowe Moore of St. Johns, sons Luther Wesley Blowe, Jr. and his wife Melba of St. Johns, Dwight Blowe and his wife Phyllis of Conway and Jerry Blowe and his wife Kathy of Winton, a sister Margaret Lee of Raleigh, 8 grandchildren, 13 great grandchildren and 4 great great grandchildren.

She was predeceased by a son Elbert Wesley Blowe.

The family will receive friends Saturday evening from 7 to 8:30 PM at the Garrett Funeral Home-Ashley Chapel, 205 NC Hwy 42 West, Ahoskie, NC 27910.

Jeannette Johnson

LASKER – Jeannette “Miss Jeannette” Askew Johnson, 83, a native of Northampton County, died August 28, 2008. She was the widow of Harry Johnson.

Mrs. Johnson was a member of the Lasker Baptist Church where she taught Sunday school and nursery. She worked in the community 30 plus years as a beautician.

She also worked at Mylcraft Manufacturing for 15 years retiring in 1986.

Survivors include two daughters, June Bridgers of Rocky Mount and Amy Parks of Jackson, four grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren.

A celebration of life service will be conducted at 3 p.m. Sunday at Lasker Cemetery by the Rev. Tim Hopkins and Rev. Ricky Barnes. The family will receive friends at Sykes Funeral Service in Rich Square on Saturday evening from 7-9 p.m. and other times at the home of Ronnie and Amy Parks, 183 Rehoboth Church Road in Jackson. Mary Lawrence

MURFREESBORO n Mary Lizzie Lawrence, died August 27, 2008 at Guardian Care Nursing Home, Ahoskie.

A funeral will be conducted at 2 p.m. Tuesday at First Baptist Church Severn by the Rev. Elijah Barnes. Burial will be in the church cemetery. Reynolds Funeral Home, Inc., Ahoskie, is in charge.

Survivors include two daughters, Elloweese Hinton of Richmond, Va., and Barbara Lawrence of Portsmouth; three sisters, Audrey Cowan of Como, Werenith Moore of Baltimore, Md., and Naomi Stephenson of Portsmouth; two brothers, Henry Stephenson of Portsmouth and Fennell Stephenson of New York; and five grandchildren.

Luther Staples

JACKSON n Luther B. Staples, 77, died August 28, 2008 at Duke Medical Center.

Staples was a member of the United States Coast Guard for 22 years. He worked for several years for saw mills and as head sawyer and saw filer until his retirement. He was a member of Jackson Baptist Church.

A memorial service will be conducted at 11 a.m. Saturday at Jackson Baptist Church by Pastor Bob Johnson. In lieu of flowers, memorial gifts may be made to Jackson Baptist Church or to the charity of one’s choice.

Survivors include his wife, Virginia L. Staples; his daughter, Sharron Hamilton of Arizona; sons, Luther B. Staples Jr. of Chesapeake, Va., and Logan Staples of Auburn, Wash.; stepdaughter, Pamela Bennett of Clayton; four grandchildren; six stepgrandchildren; and six great-grandchildren.

Maggie Bell

LEWISTON n Maggie Bell, died August 27, 2008 at her residence.

She was a member of Charity Temple Ministries, Aulander.

Survivors include two sons, Joseph L. Warren of Winton and Charlie June of Hampton, Va.; two daughters, Mary Warren of Lewiston and Barbara Jenkins of Washington, D.C.; 10 grandchildren; and numerous great-grandchildren.

A funeral will be conducted at 3 p.m. Friday, September 5 at Charity Temple Ministries, Aulander, by the Rev. James Clark Sr. Burial will be in the church cemetery. Reynolds Funeral Home, Inc., Ahoskie, is in charge.
