AHOSKIE – Those seeking information concerning the Town of Ahoskie’s annexation plans can have those questions answered later today (Tuesday).
As part of the annexation process, Ahoskie officials have scheduled a 6:30 p.m. public informational meeting at which time all residents and property owners in the proposed areas of annexation will have the process and services explained to them and will also have the opportunity to ask questions.
This meeting will be held in the Town Council Chambers at Ahoskie Town Hall. A public hearing on the matter is scheduled for Aug. 29, also at Town Hall.
The areas scheduled for annexation include Colonial Acres, North Catherine Creek Road (north of Malibu Drive), NC 561 East (Harrellsville Highway) and NC 42 West.
The effective date of annexation is Oct. 18. That process comes nearly two months earlier than the original effective date of Dec. 12.
At their June 30 meeting, the town’s governing body unanimously approved a resolution of intent to move forward with the annexation process. Included in that process is an annexation report, financial impact statements, notify property owners and provide notice of intent to the Ahoskie Rural Fire Department and Solid Waste services.
Following today’s public informational meeting and the public hearing scheduled for Aug. 29, the remainder of the process includes having town council members adopt an annexation ordinance by Sept. 8.
Upon reaching the effective date of annexation (Oct. 18), town services to the new areas, such as fire, police and garbage pick-up, must start immediately. Water and sewer construction must start within 12 months.
