WINDSOR – What once was a sparse field has crowded quickly.

For the first two weeks of filing, only two candidates had filed for three seats on the Bertie County Board of Education. That has changed dramatically.

As of 12 noon Thursday, six candidates had filed for the seats in District 1, District 3 and District 5.

In District 1, there are three candidates who have declared their intention to seek the seat on the board of education.

One term incumbent Melinda J. Eure filled out paperwork on the first day of filing. She has now been joined by challengers Pamela Chamblee and Dallis C. Godard. All three have Windsor addresses.

Emma H. Johnson of Aulander has filed to retain her seat in District 3. Johnson was appointed to fill the unexpired term of Michael Bracy when he resigned early into his firm year on the board.

Also filing in District 3 is Curtis E. Bryan of Colerain.

The winner of the seat will fill out the remaining two years of Bracy’s term.

To date, the only candidate to file in District 5 is Gloria C. Lee, a one-plus term incumbent, of Windsor.

Filing will remain open until 12 noon on Monday.
