ELIZABETH CITY – Bessie Beactrice Miner, 58, died June 21, 2008.

A funeral will be conducted at 1:30 p.m. Thursday in Joppa Missionary Baptist Church, Hobbsville. Stallings Funeral Home, Gatesville, is in charge.

Archie Newsome

AULANDER n Archie Ray Newsome, 71, a native of Hertford County, died June 22, 2008 at Roanoke-Chowan Hospital, Ahoskie.

A memorial service was conducted Tuesday at Massey Funeral Home, Aulander, by the Rev. Randy Miller. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the American Cancer Society.

Survivors include his daughters, Deborah Newsome Fuller of Youngsville, and Sandra Dee Newsome Brazille of Baltimore, Md.; sons, James Lee Newsome and Michael Richard Soles, both of Baltimore; a sister, Virginia Newsome Futrell of Millennium; a brother, James P. Newsome of Trenton, Texas; nine grandchildren; and four great-grandchildren.

Wilhemina Weaver

AHOSKIE n Wilhemina Moore Weaver, died June 21, 2008 in Willingboro, NJ.

A funeral will be conducted at 12 noon Saturday at Soul Saving Station, Ahoskie, by the Rev. Jarvis Parker. Burial will be in the Bryant family cemetery. Reynolds Funeral Home, Inc., Ahoskie, is in charge.

Survivors include three sons, Russell Moore and Troy Weaver, both of Ahoskie and Sterling Moore of Newport News, Va.; one daughter, Tambra Leary of Ahoskie; her mother, Ardell Marie Moore of Ahoskie; three brothers, John Moore of Bronx, NY, Roger David Simmons of Ahoskie and Lewis Moore Jr. of Brooklyn; four sisters, Serena Jefferson, Olivia Simmons and Brenda Smallwood, all of Ahoskie; and Janice Sessoms of Harrellsville; and 11 grandchildren.

Edith Smithwick

WINDSOR n Edith Dunning Smithwick, 86, a native of Aulander, died June 24, 2008. She was the widow of Alfred Jordan Smithwick.

A graveside funeral will be conducted at 11 a.m. Thursday at Edgewood Cemetery by the Rev. Reese Blanchett. The family will receive friends following the service at the home of Billy and Linda Smithwick, 703 Winwood Dr., Windsor. Mrs. Smithwick was a homemaker and a member of Cashie Baptist Church.

ROCKY MOUNT n Lorenzo Cooper, 74, died June 22, 2008.

Pearlie Killebrew

ROCKY MOUNT n Pearlie Killebrew, 88, died June 19, 2008.

A visitation will be conducted from 10-11 a.m. Thursday at H.D. Pope Funeral Home, Chapel, Rocky Mount. A funeral will be conducted at 11 a.m. Thursday at the funeral home by the Rev. Warren Picket. Interment will be in the Pippen family cemetery, Conetoe.

Lee Bond

WILLIAMSBURG, Va. – Lee Bond, 88, a native of Indian Woods, died June 23, 2008. He was the widower of Helen Bond.

Survivors include his daughters, Sarah Brown of Williamsburg, Betty Davis of Grapevine, Texas; a brother, John W. Bond; a half brother, Earl Daugherty; three grandchildren; and three great-grandchildren.

Bond was a World War II veteran who retired in 1960 as a boatswain’s mate chief after a 23-year career in the U.S. Navy. He was a member of Charity Lodge No. 5, the Masonic Lodge in Windsor, Fraternal Order of Police Lodge 28, Norfolk Chapter and the Fleet Reserve Association.

A funeral will be conducted at noon Thursday in Nelsen Funeral Home, 3785 Strawberry Plains Road, Williamsburg, by Retired Naval Chaplain Fred Rothermel. Visitation will be at the funeral home one hour prior to the services. Interment will be at the Wakefield Cemetery at 2 p.m. in Wakefield, Va. James E. Chauncey

NORFOLK, Va. – James Earl Chauncey, 82, a native of Portsmouth, died June 23, 2008, from Leigh Memorial Hospital.

Chauncey was a foreman in the calibration shop at the Naval Air Station Rework Facility, building LF18. He was an Army veteran, having served in Korea and Japan.

Survivors include his wife, Esther McFarlane Chauncey of Norfolk; his daughters, Debra Chauncey Lambert of Gates County and Diane Chauncey Black of Norfolk; a son, James Chauncey Jr. of Virginia Beach; one brother, Kenny Chauncey of Chesapeake; five grandchildren; and one great-grandchild.

A graveside service will be conducted at 2 p.m. Thursday in Riverside Cemetery, Norfolk, by the Rev. Frank L. Leonard. Hollomon- Brown Funeral Home, Indian River Chapel, is in charge.
